U.S. PRESIDENCY.

GOVERNOR SMITH'S POSITION.

THE RELIGIOUS ISSUE. (BT CABLE—PBES3 ASSOCIATION—COPIBIGHT.) (ACSTEALIAS AND N.Z. CABLI ASSOCIATION.) (Received January 19th, 11.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 19. As the result of a fierce debate in the Senate, lasting for several hours, between Senator Hefflin and Senator Rob. inson, the Democratic leader, in which the former bitterly attacked the Roman Catholic Church and Governor Smith, a situation of political importance has arisen which will probably lead to a definite expression of opinion from Democratic Senators as to whether Roman Catholicism renders Governor Smith ineligible for Democratic nomination for the Presidency.

The Democratic Senators will to-mor-row, in caucus, deal with Senator Robinson's resignation of leadership as a protest against Senator Hefflin's speech, and it is expected that he will be chosen again by an overwhelming majority. This will put all Democratic Senators on record on the religious question.
