A suggestion that the gumlands of the North which had beeu worked out should be devoted to the growing of flax was made to the Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. Mr Hawken) at Kaitaia recently. "I am fairly seized with the importance of iJas-growing, and believe that in time it will become a much more important industry," said the Minister. "It is capable of development to an enormous degree if the markets are favourable, but I do not agree with those flax companies which make such very optimistic statements about potential profits. It can, however, be made to pay well." In the interim, he said, he could promise nothing definite, but would have Mr T. H. Patterson, agriculture instructor for the province, investigate the possibilities of flax-growing in the North.
