MOKAU BRIDGE OPENED.
IMPORTANT ROAD LINK. (rBSSS A36OCJATIOJ! TELEGEAK.) NEW PLYMOUTH, DecemlxT 18. Forming the last link in the main highway between Taranaki and Auckland, the bridge across the Mokau River was officially opened by the Prime Minister ana the Minister for Public Works on Saturday in the presence of a very large gathering from both provinces, including the members for Waitomo, Taranaki, and Stratford. No satisfactory tender having been received for the work, the bridge was constructed by the Public Works Dcpartment at a cost of about £30,000. In declaring the bridge open Mr Coates referred to the importance of this great advance in road communication which eliminated the old ferry punt that had done sen-ice for many yetirs. Good roads were an essential factor in promoting the closer relations and co-operation between town and country so necessary to the progress of both.
