RUGBY UNION.

CANTERBURY EXECUTIVE.

The Management Committee of the Canterburr Rugby Union, met last evening.

Those present were: Messrs A. E. McPhail (chairman), A. Barrett, E. V. Phillips, A. Duggan, W. Maxwell, W. Britten, St. J. J. Dunne, A. E. Flower, R. H. North, J. K. Moloney, S. F. Wilson, and K. W. Britton.

The North Canterbury Club advised that the net gate at the. 'Varsity-Albion senior A grade match, played at Rangiora, was £IG Bs, which would be available for ground improvement. The North Canterbury Clnb also complained that tho New Brighton under 17 team defaulted without notice on July 9th. As the club's team had to travel to town for the game and had heavy travelling expenses, it would be pleased to reoeive some refund. It was decided to leave the matter over till next meeting, to enable the letter to be confirmed. ' An application was received from A. T. Boanas, secretary Tramways Football Club, for the use of Lancaster Park on August 23rd and 25th for tho playing of the annual competition among tramways teams for the Kohn shield, and for the use of a set of red and black jerseys. The chairman remarked that a tremendous number of games were being played on Lancaster Park this year.

Mr Moloney said the back grounds could be utilised if the oval would not stand it. It was stated that the application had not yet been before the Park Board.

It was decided to grant the use of the Park and the jerseys. The Linwood Locomotive Club was given permission to travel to Dunedin on July 29th to play the Dunedin loco, team for the loco, challenge cup, its colours, black and white, being approved. The Teachers' Training College was given permission to play the Dunedin College at Lancaster Park Oval on August 4th, in the liifer-Training College tournament. Complaints Against Kaiapoi. A letter from the Kaiapoi Club referred to the report of the referee, J. R. Hampton, on the Mcrivale-Kaiapoi second grade match. The club's committee had considered the mattor fully, and as practically every member saw the match, and all thought it was a clean one, without unpleasant incident, some surprise was felt at the nature of the report. It appeared that.the basis o£ the referee's complaint was alleged illegal charging. In regard to this 1 point, it was a mark which was charged in each instanco. The referee gave.a free-kick against Kaiapoi for this, and the player who was alleged to have questioned the ruling simply asked if it was not permissible to charge at a mark. Rugby law 23 was clear on this. The club would have to take Mr Hampton's wofd for it that there was persistent talking, though why a member of one team should be singled out as an example was hard to imagine, as both sides offended in this respect, although tlie game was far from being rowdy. Mr Hampton had stated that this was the second' occasion in two years that he had had trouble with a Kaiapoi team, and had to speak to them for incessant talking. Was it not a fact that the first match he refereed in which a Kaiapoi team was engaged was a third grade B "ateh v. Old Collegians last year, when the-City team was about five short, and the game became more or less a farce t Mr Hampton was then new to refereeing. The remarks made by several referees summed the position op Kaiapoi played hard football and a firm hand must be kept on them. Tho whole trouble in the gamo with Old Collegians was that the referee had not done this. One statement by Mr Hampton looked like a further attempt to throw mud at the name of tho Kaiapoi Club. ■ The explanation was accepted. a A Reinstatement. Tbe New Zealand Union advised that the application for' reinstatement from T. G. Kodgkinson had been granted on the Union's recommendation.

Tho chairman said that there was somo doubi as to whom the player wouid turn out for. It was the fiiccarton Club which made the first application. An application by the Riccafton-Sockburn Club io'r financial assistance in respect .of .Harold St. Bigg, .a member, was received, but the 'Financi Committee advised that it had no recommendation. Mr Britton. resigned from the Entertainment Committee, Mr Phillips being appointed to the vacancy. It was decided to' endeavour to play,, as a curtain-raiser to the Town v. Country match a game between town and country schools.

Mr BrittAri said that all the senior A grade matches would be played at Lancaster Park on Saturday, to enable the selectors to see as many playejs as possible in action. Mr Wilson remarked that there might be trouble on the side-grounds, if the Oval game was a "fizzle," through encroaching spectators. Mr McPhail: It won't be as keen as the games we have had; we hope so. The chairman reported that the Union was awaiting some further move from t!ie referees, who had met it in conference. Meanwhile the matters in discussion were in abeyance. Proposed Queen Carnival. Mr Britten reported, with reference to the proposed Queen Carnival in aid of amateur sport, that the aub-r.omrnittee appo.nted to deal with the matter had no recommendation to make, as the scheme was considered unworkable. It was preparo'd, however, to recommend that the matter be referred lo the clubs for consideration. This was cpproved.

The secretary said there was &till about £220 to pay over to the unemployment funds as the result of Charity Day. It was decided to publish a balancesheet.

The chairman said that, according to an estimate prepared by the secretary, the receipts to the end of tbe season would be about £1405; This included representative fixtures: Against this must be set an estimated expenditure of £1923. The Union had £6OO in tho bank. If their anticipations .were realised, they would have a balance of about £BOO. at the end of tho year. Some 61 the larger items among the expenditure were £3OO for the northern tour, £3o6' for the Show Grounds, £BO for a visit to the Coast, and £3OO. for the new ground. Mr Wilson remarked that a liability of £BOOO would have to ( be met in connexion with the new grandstand, and £SOOO, plus interest, for the. new ground. MrilcPhail: "Yes, we have pretty heavy Habilities; we shall have to exercise all Caution. We have had a comparatively gfood year. The'. average takings at club games last year had been £120; this year they were £127. To, date, thirteen matches had been, played last year and twelve this vear." After a brief discussion, it was decided to apply for.a,_rebate of ground rents from the Domains Board in the case of severalgrounds wh : cb had not been put in order as promised.

Members expressed the opinion that the south ground at Lancaster Park should be "spelled" as much as possible, rs it was badly churned up.

A SUGGESTED MATCH. OTAGO SEEKS MORE INFORMATION. - [THE PBESS Special Service.] DUNEDIN. July 19. At a meeting of the Otago Rugby Union, the Canterbury Rugby Union wrote suggesting that an Otago junior representative team should play a Canterbury Senior B representative team. Tho letter stated that it was realised that the standard of the Otago juniors was much above that of Canterbury. The Canterbury Union was of opinion that the match suggested would be one in which the teams would be. evenly matched, and which would result in a much better game. It was decided to ask the Canterbury Union whether their Senior B players were eligible for the Canterbury representative team. It was also decided to point out that the Otago junior selectors in picking the Otago junior team confined their soloetion to young junior players who were coming on. The older junior players were passed over, and so also were senior players who had dropped back into the junior grade.
