'■• *■ -It was decided to Inform the Christchurch City Council -that -the county had only ono' reserve of five acres at present unlet nnd ready for planting, and this it was proposed to plant in July. Tho suggestion of the Eaiapol Borough Council for a conference to discuss tho proposal that tho borough should absorb a portion of the county, was deferred till after the harvest. In tho exchango of roads through Mr Doublcday's land, between Kaiapol and Stewart's Gully, it was decided to charge Mr Doublcday £l2 per acre Jor tho five acre* ofexcess land to be granted to him. The offer of Messrs Farrier and Walker to supply screened shinglo on the roads at varying prices as per distance from the Empfro bridge, was accopted, and the Engineer given authority to make the necessary purchases as required. Mr C. V. Woodfleld wrote stating that two promised signatures to the petition for a bridgo at Wolff's ford could not bo obtained until tho Council definitely decided whether or not tho Blackmore's ford proposal was to be gone on with, nnd asking for a speedy answer on that point. The letter further stated that a revised proposal could be put forward if preferred, including only those properties directly, behind or adjacent to the bridgo site in question, and to which tho Council could take no objection. Tito Council decided not to make a grant to help the Yachting Association entertain tho visiting yachtsmen, feeling that the matter did not greatly concern the country ratepayers. The proposal of the British Pavements, Ltd., to tar-seal certain main Toads in the county and maintain them for five years, taking payment in five annual payments, was deferred for consideration. It was decided to inform tho Public Works Electrical Department that the Council was prepared to accept tho offer of tho Department to supply current for milking plants at 4jd per unit if consumers put in meters at their own cost. It was decided to ask tho Waimakariri River Trust to remove sand and spoil deposited under several spans of the Coutts Island bridgo to improve tho waterway there, and to ask the Walmairl County Council to remove debris collected around the piles of the Empire bridge, and to fill in holes forming in its asphalt surface. Thcro being sparo land at the Clarkvillc cottage, it was decided to fence it into two paddocks for use by drovers with travelling sheep, at Is a 100 a night. The clerk reported somo £I7OO of rate*. £3OO from Main Highways Board, and £IOO other amounts yet to come in which, if collected before the end of March, would leave the finances on a sound condition at tho end of the year. Tho Engineer reported the roads generally in good order, but that tho Main Highways Board's inspector had refused to pay the 60 per cent, subsidy on any length of road on which stones could bo found which would not go through a lain ring, whether the roads had been lately spread or were the result of patching with unscreened shinglo in the past. Though this reflection applied chiefly to tho middle road, shingled some two years ago before screening methods had been adopted, it applied generally to all the 27 miles of main highway. Screening thus having become imperative, the Engineer advised immediate Inspection of tho appliances being made for exhibition and trial tests and the purchase of the most suitable ono together with soaio form of motor grader, and a motor-tiuck for quirk haulage.
