SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mr J. Uollo Sharp, who has been in Timaru for some weeks, left for Oamaru by the first express yesterday. Mr and Mrs J. Hawkins are spending a fortnight's holidav in Invoreargill. Mrs Rowland Hill (King Country) is the guest of Mrs It. F. Hill (Mere Merc street). Misses E. Stockley and K. Miller, the Xcnv Zealand lady swimmers, with Mrs Miller, left by the first express yesterday, for Ashburton. Dr. and Mrs Holmes and Dr. and Mrs Dcvaine, who cnnie from Australia to attend the Medical Conference in Duncdin, spent the weekend in Temuka. Mrs F. J. C. Wilson and son (Invcrcargill), Mr and Mrs Urquhart, and Miss Anderson (Strcnnilnnds, Mackenzie Country) ,nrc nt the Bungalow. General News. Yesterday morning at the Timaru Police Court, before Mr D. McLennan, J.P., a first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s in default -i hours imprisonment. Cycling down a back street yesterday afternoon a youth who held a large pane of plate glass under liis left arm skidded in some shingle and came to the ground with a crash. The glass shivered into a mass of fragments and cut open the front tyro of the bicycle, but the lad had a miraculous escape and did not receive a scratch. Unemployment Severe. The question of conserving somo wcrrk to assist the unemployed is exercising llio minds of members of tho Timaru Borough Council although tho town is comparatively free from those who aro unnblo to find work. The matter was mentioned at Monday night's meeting of tho Borough Council, Cr. P. C. Vinnell stating that tho problem was a national ono and that tho assistance of the Government should bo sought. Cr. Vinnell said that thero was no doubt that the coming winter would be a severe one and the Council should see what could bo done in the way of help for the genuine unemployed. Tho question of co-operation with other local bodies is to be discussed at an early date. Big Gala Event. Timaru Harbour will see great activity on Saturday, when tho Timaru Rowing Club and the South Canterbury Swimming Association will combine in a gala event, which will include several important) rowing contests and the Speechley mile swimming race, In tho
latter, many South Canterbury champions will compete, and it is anticipated that some fine performances will be witnessed. The harbour is an ideal location for a regatta, being well protected and ample as to space. The accommodation for spectators will be such that excellent vantage points will be available.
