As a frequent' traveller in the steamers, Lord Inchcspe said he was lost in admiration of the skill and caution which permeated the bridge and the engine-room, between which departments there .was perfect harmony and co-operation,. greatly to the comfort of all on board. It was no essy matter, in addition to keeping the engines moving, to maintain in perfect working order the electric light, the refrigerator plant, hot and cold water service, the ventilating system, etc., throughout the whole of the ship, with perhaps a thousand souls on board. Under their capable chief medicsl officer, Dr. Chaplin, they had in the ships a fine body of medical men. The work of the ahips wss carried on without noise; the vessels were kept like yachts, with every part always tidy and scrupulously clean. Civility and attention to passengers were observed; discipline as a rule left nothing to be desired. The skill, loyalty and devotion of the staff were assets of which they had reason to be proud. The resolution was carried unanimously. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Lord Kilbraeken, dividends for the halfyear ended September 80th last of 2} per cent., less income-tax, on the preferred stock, and of 5 per cent., free of income-tax, on the deferred stock, were declared, payable on and after December 10th. The eleytlon of Sir O. B. Clarke as a director was approved; the auditors—Mr F, A. White and Colonel Sir Robert Williams'— were reappointed, and • hearty vote of thanks to the chairman, the directors, and the staff ashore and afloat, concluded the proceedings.- /
