ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
,_. The fortnightly meeting of the Aahburton Borough Council m held lut evening, when the Deputy-Mayor, Mr W. H. Wood*, presided. There were also present: Crs. J. W. Bowden, B. M. Dunlop, John Weteon, W. O. Hillier, F. W. Seldon, W. H. Bobinson, B. A. Collin*, end B. Kerr. The financial statement showed that the sum ol £lB3 lis 3d had been received since last meeting. Tho Aahburton Volunteer Fire Brigade forwarded a financial statement for the year ended January Slat, 1927, in which it waa shown that there was a credit balance of 488 16a lid. The year was commenced with a credit of £3B Oe Id. A liat of the office™ elected at the annual meeting wii submitted for approval. The appointment* were approved. A petition, signed by 61 ratepayers, was presented to the Council, with a request that March Sth, the occasion of the annual trades picnic to Timaru, be declared * whole holiday. It was decided to comply i.ith (he roquwt. Tho borough foreman (Mr T. Gibson) w«s givon permission to close that portion of East atreet. from. Tailored street to Moore street, while motalling and top-dressing operations were being carried out. The Aahburton Amateur Cycling and Athletic Club wrote asking that the oval in the Domain be reserved for the club's annual fixture on March 26th. This was agreed to. It waa decided that the By-laws Committee go into the question of revising rentals for kerbside petrol pumps before March 31st. Councillors sgrccd that too many bowsers were being erected in the congested area of the town, and it was decided that no more applications be granted for the erection of kerbside pumps in the following ares:—East street, between Moore and Hevelock streets; Burnett atreet and Tattered street, betwetn East and Cass streets. The Aahburton Brigade of the St. John Ambulance Association was given permission to take up a collection in the streets on February 25th. The Advance Aahburton Asaxiation »as granted permission to plant trees on the south side of »Walnut avenue, bstween West street and Oak grove. Cr. Kerr teported that, as a result of tho extremely hot weather daring the last weak, all the local butchers, with the exception of one, had suffered considerably through the loss of meat. Permission to kill at the abattoirs on a Sunday in the event of similar conditions arising waa left to the chairman of .the Abattoirs Committee and the manager of the abattoirs.
