COUNTY COUNCILS.
. CHEVIOT. The Cheviot County Council hold their monthly meeting, on Saturday, when there wore present: Messrs J. H. L. Hialt (chairman), Thos. Stevenson, S. Douglas, W. L. Foster, and D. McLaren. The Mayor of Christchurch wrote concerning a conference to deal with the unemployed question. As the date for the conference had passed, the clerk was directed to reply that the Council would be pleased to place labour on work when it was available. The Minister for Railways wrote stating that the Railway Department was supplying 40 feet of concrete- piping for the purpose of eliminating the water nuisance at tho Parnassus stock entrance, providing the Council undertook the work. Permission was granted to the Mackenzie School Committee to carry drainage pipes across the Caverhill road, subject to the engineer's approval. The Council approved of ths streets o« laid out and formed in the seaside town of Haitai-Moana, and a certificate was issued accordingly. Instructions were issued to the engineer to remedy the sanitary defects at the Gore Bay bathing sheds and make other improvements. The clerk slated that a movement was on hand to form a life-savinj association in the district. Bathers at Gore Bay often numbered from 200 to SCO, and narrow escapes from drowning bad been experienced lately. The Council promised to assist the association when formed by the purchase, of a life-saving line and reel, such to remain the property of the Council. The chairman's action in promising £3O to the Royal Visit Fund was approved. The engineer reported that 409 yards of shingle had been placed on tho Main road, 223 yards on the Caverhill road. 066 yards on the Kaiwara road, and 13 yards en the Munro road. Fair progress waa being mads with tho Darroch bridge approaches, but ths erection of the bridge had not vet been started. The concrete culvert on the Hurunni Valley road was about completed. Total expenditure to date amounted to £7491 ;Gi lOd and total receipts £7598 Pe Cd, leaving a credit balance of £ll3 3s Bd. It. was resolved to call tonders for ■*« tons of thaff and 300 bushels of oris. . Crs. Stevenson and Mciklc were authorised to r-nrchase two hones.
