MASTER PRINTERS.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE. [THE PBESS Special Sarviee.] WELLINGTON, February 14. Tho twentieth annual meeting of the New Zealand Master Printers' Industrial Association of Employers was held on Friday. Tho president (Mr T. Somcrvillc, of Dunedin) presided over a largo and representative meeting. , Prior to proceeding to business the president referred to the loss tho printing industry had sustained during the past year in tho deaths of Sir Hcnrv Brett, and Mess'rs F. Pirani (Wellington), E. 11. Waddington (Mnsterton), and T.. Avery (New Plymouth), the members standing at the conclusion of his remarks. Dealing with tho revision of tho tariff the president pointed out that the remedy of tho present decrease in business did not lie entirely in an increase of tho tariff, nor would tho imposition of further duty Btop tho importation of lines that could be manufactured here. The solution of this problem lay along two ntaiu avenues, an increase in the production' of our primary pro l ducts, and a rise in tho world's parity over which wo had no control, while the other was to reduce our importation to the point where tho balance of exports over imports would be sufficient to meet tho necessary interest on loans floated abroad. The latter solution l:iy to a great extent in the hands of local manufacturers, who should, wherever possible, insist on being supplied with their necessities made within New Zealand. It was decided that a permanent secretary be appointed, tho details being loft to tho incoming Council. A proposal that tho Federation be recommended to appoint a sub-committee to look into tho whole question of tho joint council scheme, and report to the Council, was carried.
