As proof that a benign spirit is protecting him, Signor Mussolini recalls that in" wartime he was in hospital suffering from 42 hand grenade wounds, "The Austrians begin a week's aeroplane and artillery bombardment ofthe hospital. Wounded men rolled from their beds, but the shells took toll of the lot, and I remained helpless in -bed, but Was at last carried out, the solo survivor, after poven days of the most terrifying experience of my life."
