HAWKE CUP. TARANAKI V. HAWKE'S BAY. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) / NEW PLYMOUTH, January 14. Low scoring on a bowlers' wicket was a featuro of the Hawke- Cup match to-day, when Taranaki, who won the trophy from Wanganui recently were challenged by Hawke's Bay. Heavy rain overnight causea a postponement till the afternoon. The visitors won the toss .and batted on a slow wicket. They made only 94 runs for the innings and then Taranaki went in to make 89 for eight wickets by the time stumps were drawn. Bowlers had charge of the game throughout and were assisted by the wicket to. secure some fine averages. Even so, batting lacked enterprise and waa generally disappointing except in a few cases. Hawke's Bay's best scorers were Lowry 26, Davis 15, O'Brien not out 25. Clarke took one for 38, Cole three for 34, Penny, four for 18, and Eggleton one for 1. For Taranaki Grayson made 25, Nasmitk 15, M. M. Brown 12, Kingston 12, and Bottnll not out 11. Pirie took none for 7, Stephenson two • for 4, Mitchell three for 43, and M. Beuth three for 2.
