STORM AND FLOOD

DAMAGE IN THE NORTH ISLAND. BRIDGES DESTROYED. (P-BESS ArSOCUTION TBLBOKAM.) TAUMAHUNUI, May 3. A tremendous downpour last night caused the rivers to rise rapidly this morning. The Wanganui River was not greatly affected by flood waters, although running much above normal level, but tho Ongarue River was high and 'carying much debris, with the result that Taringamotu Bridge was carried away at eleven o'clock this morning. This means that communication north of 'faumarunui by road is now cut off. The bridge at the same place was carried away I>y last year's floods. Tho stock bridge at Napier's farm in Taringamotu Valley was also washed away. Fortunately the rain ceased about 4 o'clock this morning, and has held off since. Bad the rain continued, tho Wanganui would probably have risen to a dangerous height. The Pukuweka Sawmills Co. at Manunui has been forced to abandon operations owing to damage caused by the flooding of the Punga Punga stream. The company's bridges have been carried .away. With the destruction of the first bridge all communication with the men operating higher up ceased, and the full extent of the damage is not yet known.
