DRAINAGE BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Christchiirch Drainage Board was held last night. Present—Messrs H. JT. Otley (chairman), W. J. Walter, H. Holland, A. Smith, H. G. Livingstone, w. J. Beanland, E. H. Hamilton, W. R. Carey, W. A. Bowse, S. C. Bingham. Works Beport. The Works Committee reported that a letter -had teen received from the Medical Officer of Health, stating; that in his opinion the time had arrived for the Board to consider the laying down of a. proper atorrhwater system throughout the district and suggesting that the question of drainago from offensive trades be conoideieJ at the sama time. The committee considered the present time inopportune for the carrying out of this work on account of the largo expenditure on the extension of the sewage system and the consequent heavy rating in connexion therewith. Consideration of the matter had therefore been deferred. A further letter had also been received from the Medical Officer of Health regarding a complaint from the Waimairi Burgesses' Association about the flooding of land in Bun-wood, <Bjid suggesting that the dredging- of the lower reaches of the. Avon might drain the land referred to. The committee had replied to the effect that nothing could bo done, because tho land was • below tide level. The Unemployment Committee had written asking permission to clear the land owned by the Board on the river tank near the Barbadoes street bridge. The-committee had granted authority for the work to be done subject to_the approval of the Board's engineer The Post and Telegraph Department had wri.ten complaining of flooding of the streets at the corner of Kilmore, Dai-ham and Victor,* streets, and asking that steps be■ taken io imnrove the drainage in this locality. The engineer hatf been requested to report on the matter.
