The chairman of the Main Highways Board wrote stating that the Board had recently passed a resolution requiring that important proposals for highways improvement, when being submitted by local authorities, should be, accompanied by financial statements proving that the work will be an economical proposition for the ratepayers. The chairman'of the Main Highways Council wrote stating that it was proposed to hold a conference in Wellington about the' end of July, and the Board had invited tho executive members of each highways district to attend. and' asked for suggestions for amendments to the Main • Highways Act. , It was decided to suggest that all main highways be classi-' tied and that a larger subsidy be given for maintenance.

'The Canterbury Progress League wrote stating that it had been decided to convene a conference of delegates from County Councils comprising highways groups Nos. 13, 14, arid 15,'for-the purpose of discussing and reviewing- the present situation as regards main highways legislaticn. Hall and Hight were appointed to attend. • The Medical Officer'of Health wrote regard-ing-the .Health Act Tegulations and suppresifon •of mice and rats; also, forwarding a copy of model by-laws relating to dwellings and" Buildings for human habitation. The Eyre County Council wrote drawing attention to the exorbitant charges on trac-tion-engines and trailers under the motor-lorry regulations, and stating it had made application to the Minister that the matter of charging heavy traffic fees on trailers should be left to the local bodies to regulate under their bv-laws, as that of traction-engines is at present. It was decided' to support the Eyre 'County Council in the direction required. jlr'P. B. Askin wrote asking that a mile of Leach's track be re-formed and metalled, which was agreed to. Mr E. if. Sime wrote asking'that the Terrace road be'shingled from Sleeman's road to "Webb's gate, and offering one-third of an acre of land for a shingle pit. It was decided thnt the matter he considered next autumn. The Asliburtbn County Council forwarded the engineer's estimate C-S800) for repairing the Gorge bridge. It was decided to reply stating that pending receipt of the District Engineer's estimate of the. cost of a new bridge, the Council could not come to a decision in the matter. The Hospital Board wrote stating that the Minister had ruled that 6j per cent, interest should be payable oh all unpaid instalments of hospital levies.
