Mantua has again been thrown out of -work, and may have .a long spell before being taken up again. Keremoana, the winner of the Thompson Handicap, lias not been raced much this season, and yesterday's effort was his eighth since the first of August last. At his best he is a speedy horse, and seems to bo at homo on the Trentham track. At his last appearance thero he downed Tukia and several other good ones in the Xainai Handicap in October. Keremoana, at an advantage of 141b from Rational, defeated the Absurd gelding in ■ the St. Patrick '3 Handicap at Opunake. He is a halfbrother by Hallowmas to Lady Bentinck and Lady Cavendish. When away from his home course, Wanganui, Delugo had not previous to yesterday reproduced the good form ho had shown in his work. A patient policy has evidently made him more solid, and his success in the Railway Handicap at Trentham has been its reward. He heat a good one in King Mbrv, who has apparently benefited by tho operation he underwent a few months ago for throat troubles, an.l from now on should be dangerous in whatover company he steps out. Archeen, who defeated the Riccartontrained gelding Haze in the Silverstream Handicap at Trentham, is ono of the most consistent hacks racing in New Zealand at the present time. In his last nine starts the MaTble Arch gelding's record reads three wins, fivo seconds, and a third. Yesterday's win just puts him out of hack class. The Australian-bred horse Acre has done very well to prdjtluce three winners in his first season, Star Area, Arpent, and Lin Arlington, and on yesterday's form Star Area is likely to bring this young sire into further prominence before the juvenile events are completed for the current season. ' Though in receipt of weight from most of his opponents yesterday, lie must be fairly useful, for it is seldom that so many well-performed youngsters are brought together in a handicap. Including Star Area, seven of those seen out had been successful in good races earlier in the season.

; ; Notes on the Bating. ! The "weather ne doll for the opening of the , 'Wellington Bacing Club's Autumn Meeting, but it was very pleasant and the sun. shone out as,the day adranced. dees, and Son o' Mine ■would have finished much closer to the winner had they got better places at the barrier. The withdrawal of Jubilant and Muscari from the New Zealand St. Leger States left i five runners, and they were not r,n isypreesive lot. Not one of them looked a good horse, and the three-rear olds of this season must go down in racing history as si medium class lot. The Banker was backed down to a two to one on price. All got away together, and at the end of half a mile, run in 54 1-os, Shining Armour was leading-, but all five were reefing hard. After going' six furlongs in lm 20 l-Ss, Quiescent took charge and livened up the pace, the seven furlongs peg being pilrSred in lm 33 l-Ja. Quiescent continued to make the pace and was never caught, but he might have been had The Banker £one after him earlier. As it traa, the latter tried to give away several lengths start over the last three iurlong3 to • gelding who had made the running at a pace to suit himself. B. Morris's finish on the favourite was very weak. The winner , is by Kilbroney from Afterglow (who won the St. -Leger for Mr G. D. Greenwood in 1919) by Demosthenes—Sunglow by Multiform—Ottorden, the imported dam of Martian, so on breeding lit: es it is not surprising that he should win. The time record for the race is 9m o" 4-Ss, put up by Duo when he won in 1921 as compared with the 3m 2is done to-day by Quiescent. Some very niee tfro-year-olds started in the Plunket Nursery, Gold Acre and Black Cat were the best backed, having drawn the in«ido positions, at the barrier. Both were beaten on their merits, for they were first away and led until Star Area and Shirley who drew outside positions, headed them off. Had Star Area and Shirley drawn inside berths, there would have been a lot of daylight between them and the rest at tha finish. Centrepiece was never prominent. Quest and Hipo were the only withdrawals from the Thompson Handicap. Sunny Loch and Martian Miss sweated freely Trhen paraded, and Civi'ity went very short in his preliminary. Snatcher and Glenross gave trouble at the barrietv and eventually were left, iwhile Suggestion, Siilliewinkie, and Surveyor were alow to get going and were Boon chopped back, Suggestion getting the worst of the deal. Beremoana, Good Sport, and Trosham eet euch a soiid pace that anything slow to begin never had a chance of getting to them, and they held their lead all the way. Beremoana had the raco wan two furlongs from home. He looke3 a much better liorse than he did when ho won at Trentham in tie Spring. Tlio win gives him a 101b penalty in the C.J.C. Easter Handicap. Suggestion ran a great race and finished sixth, and he was travelling on at the finish, while Surveyor did well to make up his ground and finish fourth. Pilliewinkio after being ehut in for a long way, could not do much better after ho got free, and his showing was not up to expectations, I/ion never showed up and ho finished second last, Snatcher being behind him, while Sun Up, Clandhu, and Glenross were just in front of him. Sun Up got a good pie sage, but ho failed to stay. Pool's Paradise was beaten on his merits and none of the others ever threatened danger. The two unlucky horses in the rac® were Suggestion and Surveyor, and with good fortune, they would have been very hard to beat.
Gloaming was loudly cheered when he entered the birdcage for the Challenge Stakes. The old fellow stripped well and was quiet Mid collected. Inferno and Motley also looked well and all three strode down freely in their preliminary canters. The starter sent the trio away in lino from a walking up start, Gloaming being on the inside. Motley soon took charge and followed by Inferno led past the half-mile Tjost, the two being there on sufferance. Then Gloaming ran round and joined Motley in the lead. Never being 63 tho bit, ho won the New Zealand Challenge Stakes for the third time in four attempts. In 1919 lip fell' at lue start, or it might have been bis fourth victory. The old fellow received an ovation when lie returned to the Scales. Inferno, ridden out with the whip, got up to beat the tirjing Motley by a head. On looks there was nothing among the that paraded for the Silvdrstreani -Hack Handicap _ that will ever do great things on the turf. Tho stajt was good, but tho field was soon strung out. Entering tho straight Haze took charge, but Archeen challenged him at once, and as soon as G. Young moved on the former he swerved and looked as if he wis going to shirk. He let Archeen 113 alongside him, and from there on Archeen was always a winner. The two were w6ll clear of th« rest, and Archeen won easily. The Cheat, who looked big, ran a fair race into third placj, but Rich Prize gave a bad showing. As a matter of fact, nothing looked to. have a chanco of beating Archeen and Haze. Te Monanui -was elow to find his feet and was soon a long way back. A well-conditioned lot of horses went to the poet f6r the Railway Handicap, from which Piquant, Reretnofcna, and Abbey Bell were withdrawn. Nothing looked better than Hipo and Rafa, the latter a sturdily built gelding end a nico mover, but a little inclined t.D be wild. Hipo attempted to buck when doing his cantor, but the rest went down well. The start was good, and the field ran together to the oonrpe proper. Then the race lesolved itself into a struggle between Deluge, King Merv, and Pelham, and they fltehed past tho post with little between them, Deluge just heading the other two in the last few strides. Hipo ran a fair race-: Ho was well placed in the early pirfc of the race, but failed to see the journey out at the paco set. Ilka, who began smartly, was one of the first _on to the course uroper, and she alsa failed to run on, Whilo Moorland, who could not go •with the others in the first furlong, was close enough up with two furlongs go, but ho gradually driftpd back, and was cine of the last to finish. King Merv was always well up, and so was Rafa. Merit, Lucius, and Master Sandstone were not dangerous, and neither was Degage but Hallmark ran surprisingly well. Barn Owl was not prominent until entering the etraight. Tho day's racing was brought to a cloae with the Tinakori Handicap, -which was a. good betting race. Tho seventeen runners went down well, and they lined up quietly nt the barrier. The start was good, but Lava assumed 00m mind, and thereafter she was never headed, but ehe had to be hunted out to hold tho advantago she had on entering the course proper. The slb apprentice allowance was claimed for her rider, A. Didham. The Solferino filly's performance i was the more meritorious, as she started from No. 15 at the barrier. Subjection, Megalo, Tutankhamon. axd Royal Form were 1 the only runners to threaten Lav?., but she had them beaten on entering the course proDer. Subjection owfd his second place to having started from No. 1 at th« barrier. Had Salymis been anywhere near the inside Instead of No.. 11, he would probably have beaten Her.

Great Bingen -worked two miles -without the straps, and paced in hi* -iwimil free style. The son of Kelson Bingen ana Bertha Belle is well forward, but Will not race at Wellington, ind will bo reserved for the Metropolitan T.C.'s Easter. Meeting. D. Withers drove Aoroh two miles. The pace was not fast, but the son of I/Ogim Pointer did his work in a, pleasing manner. Sheik ancl Lecfinda. Mao were companions in a work-ont over two miles. Both hores3 paced freely, and are very well at present. ilipo and Logan Lou worked, but were not sent against the watch.
Orion was not worked f»3t, li;s mission bring a oouplo cf miles -without, the straps. Realm was allotted two miles at threequarter pace. The Australian-bred piacer is in good fettle, and looks none the worne for the racing he did at Auckland last month. Doublo Event and lady Zora in company, went a mile -and a-quarter. Both horses finished together, but Double Event had most left in reserve at the firtisli.
Harry Audubon covered two miles at a sound T>acft. 110 looks wftll, and appears to have done a lot of useful w6rk of late.
