[The late Sir Reginald Pole Carew •n'as bom on May Ist,, IS-10, and ednoaied at Eton and Christ. Church, Oxford. He served in the. Coldstream Guards from IS'SO to 1890. He was private secretary to Sir Hercules Robinson. Governor of New South "Wales, I £76-77: A .DC. to Lord Lytton, Viceroy of India. 1878-79; to Sir Frederick Roberts ("afterwards Lord Roberts), Afghan AVar, 1579-80. and South Africa. 15^8L; to Ihe Duke of Cbnnaujht, Secretary to Sir Frederick Roberts, Commander-in-Chief. India, ISSS-ISOO. He commanded the '2nd Battalion. Cold.itroani Guards, from 1890 to 1899, and commanded consecutively th© 9th Brigade <and Guards' Brigade and the 11th Division in South Africa, being mentioned in despatches twice, promoted to and created K.C.B. Ho commanded the Bth Division, Third Army Corps, from 1903 to 1905 and retired in the following year with the rank of Lieut-General. He represented the Bodmin Division, Cornwall, in the Unionist interest from 1910 to 1916.]
. ME W. G. LUXN. Mr William Green Lunn, who died recently at Hasting?, was one of the most interesting personalities connected with the development of the Ellesmere district. He was one of the earliest pioneers, arriving in Leeston when the district was very much a bog, and. it wa3' largely, due to his foresight that the Ellesmere County is now one of the best roaded districts in the Dominion. Mr Lunn was the first road surveyor to the Ellesmere County Council, which appointment he received in- 1868. Ho held the position for 44 years, until his voluntary retirement in 1012.- Thoeo who had the privilege of knowing the 1 late Mr ' Lunn personally knew one of tho whitest of whito men, who was courteous to all, and a wonderfully well-informed man. He took an active interest in many local institutions. He was one of tho foundation members of tho -Ellesmere A. and P. Association, and held positions as president, secretary, and treasurer at various tiines. Mr Lunn was on the vestry of .'St. John's .Church, Leeston, almost from tho timo it was built until ho left Leeston about four years ago. Mr Lunn was tho . essence ■of kindness and geniality, both in his private and ofiipial capacities, and endeared himself to a large circle of friends. Mrs Lunn predeceased him by about five years. He leaves three sons and ono daughter. * Private ad vice lias been received from Homo by cable of the death of FlightLioutenant A. - I). (Cody) Baillie, who was killed in an aeroplane accident on September loth. Mr Baillie left New Zealand' eighteen months ago, and on arrival in England joined tlie Royal Air Force. and was stationed at Folkestone. Pie was a grandson of tho late Colonel the Hoti. \\ r . D. H.
