A well-known farmer, James Murfin, surrendered himself to the police at Mangatang, stating that he had just; killed James Stephens, another farmer. According to a statement made by Muriin his sister was recently divorced from Stephens, and ever since relations between the families had been strained. Murfin says he was working near the road when he saw Stephens approaching on horseback. Hiding behind a treo till the unsuspecting horseman was near, Murfin then stepped out and shot Stephens in tho head with a pea rifle. Stephens died almost immediately. Murfin then hurried to tho police station.
