CANTERBURY MARKETS.
[si err co>uiEEciAx sditoe.) Friday Evening. The potato market has firmed up again. DeKreries from Melbourne are: not so regular as expected a -week ago, mid n. prospective shortage this nest week or more has creat-'d a Northern demand for the actual potatoes. During the -reek frequent sales have taken place, both for prompt .and AugustSeftPinber d-alivery, at £6 f.d.b./s.i., and in a few cases at up to £6 ss. These prices represent £4 10s on tmcks to farmers, a much better price than ■s»as ruling a fortnight ago, and rexi week will • d-smenstrate whether ;',-rowers will oifer to any extent at this National week generally rees a '.oosoning of supplies. Auckland at the •aoment is faced with an immediate shortage or. account of the disturbance of shipping, and orders for small lots zte commencing to come forward freely. The position is healthier than it was a week" ago, but the maintainance of the vise, is "dependent, very largely on the shipping available this next few weeks Crom the other side. Oats have jumped another Tang on the ladder., B's have been selling at 63 Id f.0.b., s.i., and A's as high as 6s 6d. As far back as December-January, when quotations were from 3s fid to 4& a bushel f.0.b., s.i., it was obvious that there would be a record short crop, and that an appreci." tion of values was inevitable. No one expected, however, that the rise, would eseeed 50 per cent., as it has done. It is believed that a fairly heavy sowing is taking place this season. If so a collapse of values next season is inevitable. Not many oats are wanted nowadays. Chaff is firm at £7 a ton to farmers. There is little doing in the seed market, but, advices from Home are< to the effect that values there of staple seeds are firm, which means that there is little-chance of stuff being thrown on our market. ' The following ar6 the quotations to bo paid to farmers at-country stations, ires of commission, sacks extra, except where otherwise stated : AVheat (new season's prices), Tuscan 5s 4sd, Hunters Ss 6id, Pearl 53 B§d> 1'.0.b., Lyttelton. POULTRY AND EGGS. Large entries of poultry ca.mo forward to tho market this week, and were high, due no-doubt to the "demand for Grand National week. TIMARU MARKETS. (srnau. -xo "im-nnBo") TIMAEU, -August-8. Another quiet week is 'reported by merchants, in tbo grain and produce market. Potatoes . wero a little, firmer during' tho early part of tho weok, but have dropped back' again to apathy. Nominal values aro £i 10s for whites and £3 103 for redskins. There ■is a small enquiry for seed at low ! money for local use, and apparently., a fair acreage will bo sown this season. r J3bs s-.s. Wanika took' a email shipme&t 'to Auckland on Thursday, a fair proportion of which went on consignment. Linseed is steady at £l7 on . trucks to growers for fair average quality. Prices for undergrade are correspondingly lower. Merchants ici>ort a better enquiry for rycjrrass and clover, but rain ia badly needed to stimulate tho demand. Stocks of ryegraes are practically all in merchants' hands, and aro firm at lato figures. Good cowgrass 13 retailing at lOd -to la. Prices for ryegrass range from fv. 6d to 9s 6d ;icr bushel. The demand for fowl wheat has'gemo off,, most of tho North Island ports being supplied by Australia. Ya-lues to growers aro 5s 6d or. trucks. Ch-i-ff remains unchanged at £6 15s to £7 on trucks. The dry weather is hampering offerings.. . Peas firmed slightly during tho ireek, but aro now back to the old level. Tho firsts are w-r-rth 6s on trucks. Oats aro firm for' forward <Wivcry. Tlis prico of Canadians also is hardening. Local v Gartons are quoted at Ss to 6s 3d on trucks according to quality. • The demand for seed is n:w more or' lcß3 satisfied.
