KAIROURA. On "Wednesday last a number of ladies visited the residence of Mrs H. Comer (Ludstonc road), the occasion being a afternoon in aid of the new vicarage x g Is. An amusing "aaatomy" competition was held, Miss E. Taylor being the winner. Vocal items were given by Mesdames Blackler and a. B. Clark and Miss Una Pope. Mrs Comer acted as accompaniste. A dainty tea was handed round. To-day thirty-two Kaikoura ladies will visit Cheviot and play a return hockey match. The girls will be chaperoned by Mesdames H. Parker and A. Stewart. Mr S. Andrew, of "Fernleigh," is offering 600 acres of first-class land to the Government for closer settlement. The property fronts the inland road, and is capable of providing seven dairy farms. The land, for the purpose of dairying, is equal to anything in the Dominion, being capable of supporting n cow to the acre.

SEFTON. _ At the fourth of a series of fortnightly euchre tournaments promoted by the Kowai Football and Sefton cricket Clubs the lady's prize, which was presented by Mr G. Towart, was WOtt by Mr§ Trail, while the gentleman's, given by Mt H. Jamieson, fell to Mr G. James. On Thursday a haro drive, attended by thirty residents of tho district, was held. The country shot over was the downs part of the district. Considering that there Waß another drive a few Wteks ago, the day's shooting was very successful, eighty-four hares ill all being killed. . Although the weather has been very wintry for the greater part of the week, strong South-west winds prevailingl,- voi'y little rain hag fallen. MOUNT GREY DOWNS. The fortnightly progressive euchre tottttialttent on Thursday etening was well Attended. There being very few ladies present, Bom& of the gentlemen competed for the ladies' prize, Mt W. Morgan being tlio wihner. The gentlemen's prize was won by Mr R. Miller. Mr E. Collie gave the prizes. A euchre patty, in aid of No. 9 Queen of the Carnival, was held in St. Columbus's Parish School-room on Wednesday. Prizes were awarded follows Ladies, Mrs Morris 1, Mrs J. Cooke 2; consolation, Mies Doris Griffiths; gents, Mr D. Lennox 1, Mr Devbnport 2; consolation, Mr T. Hun-' ter. At the close of the evening the ladies provided supper. A surprise visit was paid to Mr and Mrs Francis at their residence, Islington, by the Committee, and those connected with the recent bachelors' balli During the evening. Mr T. Weir, on behalf of the bachelors, presented Mrs Francis with a handsome toilet set, id appreciation of services rendered. Advantage was tai;en of the occasion by the boarders of tile house to present Mrs Francis with & dainty tea-set. Mr T. Weir, on behalf of the donors, eulogised the recipient's kind and generous attention during their association with her. Mrs Francis feelingly returned thanks for their kindness. Mr Horace Wilson, secretary, was also presented with a fountain pen, in recognition of his efficient Services. . Sflf Wilson thanked his fellow and said his work had been a pleasure. LEESTON. The annual "arts and crafts evening in connexion with the Leestou Wesley Guild, which took place on Thursday, was most successful in every way. The attendance was larger than usual, and the display of articles made by members was cme of the most comprehensive the Guild has yet gatl*?red togethc-r. jlt was plainly evident that a great ! deal of time had been given to the j making of the articles, and the display j certainly reflected credit npon all con- ' cerned. Several stalls were arranged in Wesley' Hall, and the goods were offered for sale. There were stalls for the sale of plain and fancy work, leather work, wood work, iron work, home produce, books, farm produce, vegetables and sweets, all of which wore presided over by members of the Guild, and excellent business was done, nearly tho whole of the goods being disposed of. During the evening competitions of various kinds were held, and musical items were given. A supper was well patronised. The whole of the proceeds are to go to the Guild piano fund. The following were tho stallholders:—Plain and fancy, Mesdames Harris and Ramsey and Miss Ramsey; home produce, Mrs Prosser; books, Rev. A. O. Harris; sweets, Misses Jackman and Austin; bran tub, Misses Parkin and Brown; weighing, Messrs L. Eade .and W, Dement; men's stall, Mr W. Hewitt; supper-room, Mesdames Eade, Dement, Misses Barnett, Chamberlain, and assistants. Among the competition winners were Misses Ferrier and C. Teale (cakes), S. Parking (peas in bottle), Mr G. Ryde and Miss M. Eade (nail driving), Miss M. Eade and Mr Mathieson (weight competition). Piano solos wore played during the evening by Misses King, Ferrier, Chamberlain, and Ramsey. Mrs B. 31. Robertson presided over the annual meeting of the Leeston branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society in the Wesley Hall, Miss Macdonald, organising secretary for Canterbury, gave an interesting address on the work of the Society, at the conclusion of which she was accorded a vote of thanks. SOUTHBRIDGE. At a well-attended meeting of the Southbridge Miniature Rifle Club during this week, the following officers Were elected:—Patron, Hon. Sir E. Heaton Rhodes, M;P.; president, Mr>H. F. Itiwood; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. Edwards and G. Pilkington; handicapped Mr It. Farkin; target judge, Mr H. Gr. Hawkins j committee, Messrs Edwards, M&rriOtt, 11. Inwood, Pilkington P. J. Inwood, J. Griffith, and IT. Struck. A deputation from the Southbridge Town Board explained that tho Board would raise no objection to the butts which hail been erected, provided certain conditions were complied with. Tile club has fixed the practice nights for Tuesday and Thursday, at 7.30 p.m. The official opening was arranged for Thursday, August 7th, when the club hopes to offer a trophy for the best target. The membership is now between 40 and 50.

LAURISTON. Tlie annual meeting of tho Lauriston part of the Rakaia Presbyterian charge was held at Laurißton oh Tuesday evening. trie Rev. A. S. Morrison Occupied the chair. Reports received from the various departments of service showed that tho work was progressing quietly and steadily. The manager's report Btated : that ,th 6 year had been noteworthy for the removal from tlio district of many valuable church workers, a loss very much felt in a small congregation. Aniong these were MiSseS Kilaer, Gates. Gunn, and Norrish, and Mr and Mrs Norriah, and Mr E. Nourish. The departure of Mr E. Norrisb and. Miss Gunn left tho Sunday school Very fimch depleted in strength, but it Was hoped soon to securo a new superintendent; In eftch of these cases fare-j well presentations had been made to the departing workers. ALPORD FOREST.

Some tifio ago the spinsters of Alford Forest held their annual ball. A return ball given by the. bachelors was held in the schoolroom, and proved a huge success, the room was suitably decorated fldth ferns and streamers. Patrons canleiMm as far as Mt. Somers and Methven.. Many novelty dances were introduced and thoroughly enjoyed by the participants.
