Though the points of rain which fell at Ashburton yesterday will not make a very appreciable improvement in £rrowr!i in jjartloiis and on farms, a derided benefit will bo effected to the roads. These were disintegrating very badly, but the moistening has laid the dust, and the silt will now be able once again to form a firm surface. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton East School was held thi s week. The acting-headmaster reported that the roll number at present stood at 4(35, with an average attendance of 442.8 t'or tiie month. According to a communication from the Xew Zealand Athletic and Cycling TVion. affiliation has been granted to the Advance Ashburton Association, and Labour Day has been allotted for the date of the annual sports. The flower show and sale of work held in aid of St. Stephen's Church Parish Ilall and Sunday School building funds, attracted large attendances, and proved a great success from every j ~,i,, r of view. The show of cut blooms, considering the long spell of dry weather which has prevailed, was a surprisingly good one. The castus dahlias were a great of the iloral display, these blooms being very idioice varieties, perfect and beautiful. There was also a remarkably good display of asters, as well as other flowers, pot plants, and foliage plants. There was a big attendance during the evening, when a select musical programme, under the direction of Miss B. Claridge. was given. The financial result will be a substantial, sum to_ hand over to the building fund authorities.
