CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

STUDENTS* ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Canterbury College Students' Association was | held last evening. Mr H. P. Kidson presided over an attendance of nearly three hundred students. There was considerable hilarity before the meeting and during its early stages, : but the meeting eventually settled down and a large amount of business was done. Election of Officers. The results of the election of officers were announced as follows: — President, Mr H. A*. Kidson. Vice-I'residents: Men's, Mr J. F. D. Jeune; Women's, Miss E. Tosswill. Hon. Secretary: Mr A..,.J. Learmonth. Hon. Treasurer: Mr M. Barak. Committee: Misses I. Milnes and M. Morrison, Messrs H. M. Cocks, H. H. E. Crabb. and J. M. Stewart. Annual Report. The Executive reported as follows: — The usual Carnival celebrations took place at' the end of first term, and were in every way a great success. From the Carnival the Student's Association Building Fund gained £563 6s, the profits from three nights of the Revue, and the profits of the last night of the Revue (.amounting to approximately £200) were donated to the Fund for New Zealand Blind. The graduation ceremony was held on the day before the commencement of second term, but number of students w*ere able to attend. This function brought to light the lamentable fact that only a very few students know the College songs. It is to be hoped that this state of affairs will be remedied 'before we take part in the Jubilee celebrations. Our who travelled to the In-ter-Varsity tournament held at Auckland, met with more success than at the previous tournament, and are to be highly congratulated on the results of their efforts. The boxing team and the debating team were successful in their contests with the other Colleges, and the tennis team was very unfortunate in not socring a win, after playing their way into four out of the five final matches. Mention must also be made of the showing of J. W. Calder, who lowered the N.Z. University record for the 440 hurdles. In connexion with the tournament, we must also congratulate the Haelam Shield team on their victory. The Sydney 'Varsitv Football Team spent a few days with, us during their New Zealand tour, and, though our Fifteen did not prove victorious in the match played against them, the social part of their Say was in every way a success. For this we owe our thanks to those who billeted the visitors and did so much to make them feel at home. This year an experiment was tried in issuingsix: numbers of the Review instead of two, but there was tlie # usual lack of support from students in the matter of contributions. It is left "to the general body of the students to decide what shall be done with the "Reiview" during 1928. During the vacation the Executive has been arranging a programme for the undergraduates' part in the jubilee celebrations, andi is represented on the Jubilee . Executive Committee. It only remains for the students to enter whole-heartedly into the preparations to make our part of the celebrations a success. The Professorial Board has been approached several times during the year, with a-Tiew to abolishing Wednesday 'afternoon lectures, to leave the afternoon free - for sport, but'as yet nothing satisfactory has eventuated. As willHbe seen from the balance-sheet, the building f.und is progressing favourably, and ' now amounts to £9BB 5s Id. ■ The. Executive has requested the Board of" Governors to receive a deputation in connexion with the proposed site for the building, and possible subsidy to the fund. On the whole, the year has . been a most successful one, but the Executive would urge all students to do their utmost to further the interests of the College, so that we may be at our best during jubilee year." The balance-sheet of ordinary expenditure showed a credit balance of £7: 4s sd. The consolidated fund account showed a balance of £223 4s for the year 1922.; . The report and balance-sheets were adopted. ; Building Fund. The executive reported aa follows in connexion with the Students' Buildine ■ The executive had pleasure in reporting that the building fund has been j nearly trebled during the past year. Now that the consolidated scheme h'na placed the Association and the affiliated clubs on such a soiind'financial basis, the policy has been adopted' of paying the swhole of the profits of the annual "revue" .to the -building fund'; and, in addition, it should be possible to make a~ considerable grant to the fund each year out of the surplus in the consolidated fund. Of the funds now in hand, £2OO is in the bank on fixed deposit, and the balance, of £768 5s Id ia ! available for investment. Proposals are being placed before the annual meeting for the alteration of the constitution, in order to provide for the; appointment of trustees, and for them) to be empowered to invest this sum. To raise the amount xx> one suitable for investment, it is desirable-to make*it up to £IOOO, which would "require the finding of £2ll 14a lid. The balance in band in .the consolidated fund at the end of last year (and available for allocation) is £223 4s. and the new executive is strongly recommenedi to allocate sufficient of this sumi to make up the £IOOO, which will then be available for investment, and will earn interest. The present position of the fund is as follows: £ s. d. Balance, 1921 ... ... 350 0 0 Allocation from balance in consolidated account, 1921 70 0 0 Profits of revue "Gosh.l" 1923 ... ... ... 683 6 1 Grand total ... ... £9BB 5 1 The president congratulated the students on the flourishang position of the building fund at the end of two years. At the end of five years, on present appearances, it would be possible to begin the projected Students' Union, but undue haste in commencing the work should be avoided. It was creditable that the students should be so selfsacrificing as to put aside Buch large sums of money every year far the benefit of future generations. He- moved the adoption 0? the report. The motion was seconded by Mr JX Jeune and 1 carried. The College "Beview." The Business Manager, Mr H. H. E. Crabb, submitted the foflowSg" report on the College "Review.": 1922 was toe iirst year'the College has produced six issues of the "Review," and, although it has not been the unqualified success it was hoped it' would -be, yet from the financial peine of view it is much better than'it was a few years ago. In 1920 a £6O grant was necessary to produce two issues. The nexi year it was brought down to £SO, and last year six issues were produced with a grant of £105." This 6hows that the "Review" is graduallygaining ground, and with energetic business managers should be able in one or two years to produce six issues with, a grant of not more than £SO. To show how interest among old students has grown three years ago there were 43 subscribers which brought in £6. Next year l - there were 71, which.

brought in. £l4 4s, and last year 90 bringing in, £26-12s. This is far too few, but is improving. all the time. There is still too much lack of interest among the students, although that also is improving, the number 6T studentstaking the "Review" having more than doubled during the last few years. The report was adopted, * The president asked the meeting for some expression of opinion as to the future of the "Review." Rev. K. G. Archer moved that six issues of the "Review" be produced as in 1922. The new scheme nad several drawbacks, but it had aroused more interest in the "Review" among the students. The motion was seconded by Mr A. J. Learmonth and carried, there being one dissentient. Other Business. Mr Jeune outlined new constitutions it was proposed to add to the Association's constitution in .regard to the award of College "blues," and the jpersonnel of a committee to administer University tournament affairs. Mr Jeune said that it was hoped to make the regulations governing the award of "blues" uniform throughout the four Colleges. . The constitutions were adopted It wag decided that the annual sur>scription to the Students' Association should not be payable in two instalments as formerly., 1 fi' '"'
