NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

The Tides. ' It will be high tide on the beach this morning at 5.32 o'clock, and tomorrow at 9.21, and in" the river at 10.2 and 10.51 respectively. Billiards Match. The final game of the Billiards Handicap, 250 up, was played in Jarfies's Billiards Saloon on Thursday evening. The prizes were trophies, valued at £3 and £2. There was a largo attendance of the public, and tho games proved very interesting. Clark (handicap 30) 250, won, K. Pillings (handicap 10) running to 220. Dancing Season. The opening of the dancing season locally will take the form of a carnival night in the Pier Hall on Easter Monday night. The committee are sparing no effort to make the evening a'success, and have arranged for a late car to leave for Christchureh at 1- a.m. Band Items. The Tramway Baud will play on the Esplanade Rotunda to-morrow afternoon. The local Municipal Band will give a concert at the Cashmere Sanatorium. At a meeting of the local Band on Thursday evening it was decided to change the practice night from Thursday to Tuesday. Bandsmen J. Haig and F. Haughcy were deputed to confer with the Surf Club regarding, the Band joining up with the club in holding a combined annual picnic on April Sth. Methodist Church. An interesting programme' of musical and elocutionary items was pro-, vided by the St. Albans Methodist Choir on Thursday evening, in the local Sunday School room. In addition to several anthems by the choir, a duetwas sung by Mrs Colthart and Mr C. Kindle, and solos were given by Mrs C. i\ Edgar, Miss Christian, and Mr Cntworth. Kecitations were given by Mrs C. Hindle. The choir was conducted by Mr Cutworth, and Miss Smith officiated as pianisto. Messrs G. E. Goodwin and F. Sincock voiced the appreciation of the audience. At the close the visiting choir was , entertained at supper by the ladies of the Church. An event of considerable interest to the congregation, and to the residents generally will be the opening this afternoon of the new building to be used for the purpose of Bible Class rooms. The doors will be opened at 3 o'clock by the Rev. W. Walker. Amongst those who have signified their intention of being present at the ceremony there will be Mr H. Field, of Auckland, vice-president of the Conference, and ministers from the city and suburban Churches.

Social. ' A very enjoyable social evening, organised by the' members of tlio local branch) of the Plunket Society, was held in the Pier Hall on Thursday evening. The Mayor, Mr J. Gamble, presided, arid referred to the excellent work the Society was engaged in. During the evening vocal solos were contributed by Mrs Muirson and Miss M. Eaglesome, an instrumental trio by Mr and, Mrs Poynter, and Miss Moody; recitations by Mr P. Dcy, and musical monologues by Mr 0. Collins and Mas-, ter B. Goodland were all well received; while Lieut.-Colouel A. E. Loach, Mr J. O. Jameson, and Mr 1 G. T.. Robinson delivered amusing impromptu speeches. •Amongst others present were: —Mrs Gamble, • Mrs Purse, Mr ■ and Mrs Blunt, Mrs Tracy, Mrs Ballantyne, Mr.s Bellamy, Mrs Lawrence, Mrs E. Clark, Mrs Loach, Mrs Mathieson, Mrs Neilsen, Mr Eaglesome, Mrs C. Smith, Miss D.. Hopkins, Miss M. Clark, Miss Collins, Miss M. Hopkins, the Misses Dearsloy (3), Mr F. Kibblewhite, Mr Ballantyne, Mr I£. Mjiirson, and others.' The evening's function which, it is understood, is only the first of a series,' concluded with dancing, music being provided'by the Poynter's'Trio, and Mrs Tracy playing an extra. South Brighton Items. For the convenience of residents and visitors -in the South, "The Press" can now be obtained daily at MeClintock's Store, Estuary road. A commencement has been made .by the Borough Council with the formation of the new road which «is practically a continuation of Fox street from Pine avenue to Estuary road. This new. thoroughfare will be of great con venienceto residents, providing a much shorter cut to the beach than formerly. Members of the Board of Education visited this part of the borough on Wednesday, and inspected the South Brighton Hall, now being used as n temporary school building. Before returning, the members, accompanied by Mr H. A. Glasson, secretary of the Central School Committee, visited various parts of the borough, including the Main School and grounds.

Personal. Mrs Miller, Mrs Paddy, and Mr Digle, of Eemucra, Auckland, are at present visiting Mr and Mrs Christenson, of .Estuary road. Senior Cadet Company. The local company of Senior Cadetfc have won the competition, and Lave been placed first as being the ' best '' night parading'' company in" Canterbury. ,The subjects of the competition were discipline; musketry, infantry training, attendance, physical training, and general, efficiency. On Wednesday next the company will compete at King "Edward Barracks for a trophy to be awarded to the best "night parading" company in the Southern Command, and, if successful, the company will, it is understood;" compete in the all New Zealand competition. Fire. A small outbreak of fire occurred yesterday at 3.45 o'clock, in an untenanted four-roomed cottage at 25S Esplanade, owned by Mrs llutcheson. At the time of the outbreak the dwelling, a fairly old one, was being stripped of old wall paperings by workmen, who were fumigating the building witli creosote prior to re-papering. The Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene, and confined the fire to its origin, the front room on the south side of the dwelling. Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club. The following were elected officials of the Ladies' Rifle Club at the annual meeting of the club on Tuesday: —President, Mrs F. Kibblewhitc; vicepresident, the Mayoress (Mrs J. Gamble); club captain", Mrs B. •Harding; vice-captain, Mrs'-C. Burmeistcr; lion, secretary, Mrs Brooks; lion, treasurer, Mrs Buschl; "committee, Mesdamcs McClelland, Bishop and Miss Palk. The club opens its season on Monday evening, April 9th. Burgesses' Association. A meeting of the Central Burgesses' Association was held in the Pier Hall on Tuesday evening, Mr C. Israelson presiding. Messrs P. J. Whatman (North Beach Burgesses' Association), and Messrs Muirson and Scarr (the South Brighton Association) were present as delegates. The following were reported as candidates for municipal honours:—Messrs Gahagan, Leaver, Israelson, Hulme, Chivera, Langford, J. Scott, and Gadd. Personal. Mr C.
