David, R.N.R.. who made several voyages to New Zealand som* yearn before the war, m command of the Corinthio, recently took command of the White Star liner Olympic in succession to Captain E. S. Hambleton, R.N.R. The latter who was 60 years old in TTccembor, -was making his last voyage in the Olympio before retiring on a pension, when he was seizod with a sudden illness and was admitted to a private hospital on his arrival in New. York on January 7th. Captain David, who was travelling aa observer on that voyage, took the Olympio back to Southampton. A well-known Wanganui mariner who waa discußsing types of crews in American ship*, i said it was nothing out of the common in America even at the present time to "shanghai" a few men on board to make up ft orew. The skipper had one of these experiences with a well-known character who is still operating in this business in America. He got hold of the Wanganui skipper one night and commenced, as ho thought, to fill him up 'with grog. All went well for Mr Shanghai, and the genial skipper found himself being escorted on boaid a packet which was about to sail. When he got on deck he opened hiß eyes wide and remarked: "STot this time, old sportlf Mr Shanghai looked very disgusted, when, he found that he had. wasted an evening and spent his good grog money into the bargain, as well as losing, a fee for placing a man on hoard.

Sydney's share of the £600,000 or more which represents the annual losses in Australia through cargo pillaging, is something in the vicinity of £200,000. Efforts are being continually made to Suppress the evil, but the huge amount has not been appreciably lessened. The various interests concerned have now determined up joint action, however, and there are excellent piospects that the position will adequately be met in the future. No definite scheme has finally been, decided. upon, but the proposal to establish j a special police force to patroJ the Sydney I . waterfront is regarded with marked zavour in Government, snipping aid commercial ciroles. The' State Government, incidentally, has intimated its willingness to set aside a sum of money to co-operate in combating the evil. At present the force is designed to consist of 22 constables and two detectives; and tbe g cost of maintenance is estimated at £IO,OOO per year. The whole of the Sydney wharfage system from Woolloomooloo Bay to Jones Bay, the big wharves in which oover between three ana four miles of the harbour front, will oome under the survey of the new force. In some quarters doubt is expressed as to whether the proposed force will be adequate for the large amount of work entailed in the scheme. The question of whether or not plain clothes will be adopted by the force has yet to be determined. THE WAINUL TRANSFER TO ANCHOR CO. FORESHADOWED. The reported desire of the TTnioh Company to free itself of the coastal trade of New Zealand in order to devote its energies to the intercolonial end transoceanic services is no doubt responsible for a rumour that has obtained cunency in Blenheim to the offcct that negotiations are in progress for the transfer of the Wainui to the Anchor Company's flag (eays the "Marlborough Express"). It will be remembered that the vessel missed a trip to .ficUm a we.k or two ago for the purpose of goicg on the slip at Wellington. bne waa piaced tiieie, so Uib stouy goes, in order that she might be examined with a view to her purcha&> by the Nekon company. If she satisfied the requirementa of the Anchor people she was to become their property, and would eventually join the Ngaio (formerly the Mapourika) in the Nelson-Wellington trade. "What about the Pirton-Wellingtjn service?" was the question which the "Express" reporter to whom the story was being unfolded naturally asked. "The Anchor Company will run theNikau and the Kaitoa, giving us a daily service," was . the reply. "These steamers are too small for the Nelson trade, so we ore tc havo them. It is considered that they will accommodate all the passengers i''ieriiig, seo-. ing that one of them will leave Picton and tho other Wellington every day, and as for. cargo—well, you know what a bugbear this
