UNEMPLOYED SOLDIERS.
—« ■' ACTION OF E.S.A. On Saturday morning a cheque for £IOO was tendered to Mr H. R. Smith, TWn Clerk, by Mr W. E. Leadley, secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Association, for the employment of returned soldiers who are at present out of work. It. is hoped by the R.S.A. that thjs amount will be subsidised by the City Council, pound for pound, at the end of the present financial year. In the meantime work will be found for unemployed solders immediately on the Council's reserves, or on the river bank under the supervision of Mr J. Young. In all the largo cities of the Dominion it has been found that there are numbers of disabled soldiers whose pensions are insufficient to keep them and- who are existing on casual work of a light nature. It is urged by the 11.5.A. that the Government should assist the men as far as possible by providing light work such as messengers, caretakers, night-watchmen, liftmen, crossing keepers, etc., and an effort is to be made by the Dominion Executive of the N.Z.K.S.A. .to induce the Government to take action in this direction. The Dominion Executive meets in Wellington next week, when this matter amongst otters will be dealt! with.
