LADIES' RACE AT MAIREHAU. One of the most exciting and interesting races ever held in-Canterbury *°f P l "* at Mairehau on Thursday night, when the ■Jocal club held a ladies' race. Miss Madge Bonis (lm 10s), time, am 12s . 3 - „, j Mrs N. Swift (456), time, 8m 345, 4^ Miss N. Field, from scratch, secured, lasiest time, riding the distance in 6m .MS. The following also started-Misse* M. Fuller, E. Digney, E. Thaw, M. Purcell, B. Frawley, A. Abram, L. Forscutt, U O'Malley, R. Danris, M, Allison, I. *«*- Mabel Barwald and N. Purcell. Several ladies wore racing costumes ana all rode men's racing cycles. Miss Madge Bonis, who came third, was the youngest rider in the race, and is the daughter ol Mr A. Boniß, the well-known rider. After the race the presentation of prizes was made by Mrs W. J. Walter. The committee are arrangins i« anotnei ladies' race. Mrs "Walter has promised a gold medal for first prize, and several people who witnessed the race have subscribed enough for a second prize. ( After the ladies' race, an old-timers race was run over the same course, and "us, too, caused a great deal of excitement. Twelve started, and the result was:— L. Young (30s), time, 7m 49a, 1. E. Martin (455), time 8m 7s, 2. J. Suckling' (lm), time 8m 245, 3. I H. Gibson, from scratch, secured fastest time, riding the distance in 7m 255. The handicappers for this race were the two well-known riders, Messrs A. Bonis ana M. F. de la Cour.
