During the past few days a party of five aboard a launch enjoyed excellent fishing in the waters off Mayor Island near Tauranga. On Thursday they Xed Cv flako sharks< all ot' which provided good sport. On Saturday three verjsrge swordfish were hooked, but eventually escaped. On Monday two swordfish were hooked. One ot these broke away, but the other was captured after a keen struggle. It weighed nearly 30Mb. Another fishing party spent three days off the is and. On Thursday they hooked a large swordfish. After being held for some time it broke .a very stout line and got: away. This fish gave a great display of jumping. After snapping the line it travelled at a great speed. A large kingfish was hooked, but after 15 minutes the hook tore away. On Saturday 1 a Mako shark, 7ft long, furnished exciting sport. It broke two lines in quick succession and was then hooked on a very strong line. The fish fought desperately for half an hour, and leaped several times right out of the water. The party eventually manoeuvred the Mako into a position near the launch, and one of those on the vessel gaffed it and it was pulled aboard. About a dozen swordfish were sighted during the trip. Every day several hapuku were caught, the largest weighing about 80ib. Snapper, rock-cod, kahawai, and other small fish were caught.
