An old iancimarii at the northern ena : of the city, the Thomdon baths, is now in course of demolition (says the Wellington "Post"). The building, which Has been closed to the public for about two years, was the property of the Citv Council, and latterly it has fallen into disrepair. The Council considered the advisability of. removing the building and re-erectine: it elsewhere, but it -eras finallv decided to dispose or" it at the best offer. It was sold, and is now being demolished by tho purchaser. ; But for tho prompt action of the i medical officers there would hare been | a serious outbreak of bubonic plague m , the Port of London during December. A large steamship arrived in the port ] from South Africa carrying a cargo ot grain. A man had recently died on board, presumably from typhoid fever, but really from bubonic plague. The port sanitary authorities then discovered that the cargo of grain was over-run with plague-stricken rats. Even theship's two cats were "down with it.
