In presenting a petition which represented over twelve hundred electors of the borough, Mr Israelson said that the names appearing on the'list had not been attained in a haphazard manner, and lists had not been left in shops to be signed by anyone They were the-iuimes of ratepayers and residents who had expressed a distinct Wish that Mr Kibblewhite should allow, himself to -be. nominated for the Mayoralty. The, signatories were of the. opinion that a change in the personnel of the loeal government was vitally necessary. Mr'Kibblewhite when retiring from -office i two, years ago had promised that' after '".a rest from, local affairs he would "again seek office if desired. ; ' " Messrs Walter Herrick- and AHulrhe and others spoke in similar terms. * Mr Kibblewhite, in reply, said that he of course had known of the proposed deputation and he had dreaded their coming. Although he felt most intenselv how much he would have liked to accede to their wishes, yet he had given the matter his very deepest and fullest consideration, and had come to the conclusion that it would be impossible fdft.him to grant the request as contained in -trie;' petition. He felt the compliment-very deeply and would assure those gresenti'tßat two years hence if- approached" he would consider favourably the matter of nomination for the Mayoralty:, f fit was impossible that evening to express adequately his feelings of appreciation of the action of the deputation and of those who signed the petition.
