LATEST FIGURES. A return, week, but subject to revision, gives the total population of New Zealand on December 31st last, exclusive of Maoris, at 1,265,563 males 645,622, females 619,941. On December 31st, 1921, the total population was 1,239,966— males 633,010, females 606,926. The total increase for the year was 25,597, made up as follows: 1 Males. Females. Jt749 Total net increase during 1322 •• •• 12,585 13,015 The estimated Maori population on December 31st last was. -53,520— males 28,260, females 25.260; the total for the Cook Islands was 13,300—males 6740,-fe-males 6560: and that from Western Samoa, 38,395—ma1es 20,385, females 18,000. The grand total for New Zealandand the mandated territory was thus, 1j3f0,778—males 701,007, females 669,771. BIRTHS AND DEATHS. The number of births registered in 1922, states the Government Statistician, is the second higuest ever readied in the Dominion; but the birth-rate is extremely low, and, in fact, is, with one exception (1919), the lowest ever experienced. £Tie death-rate for the year is also extremely low, and approximates closely that of 1921, which is the lowest on record.
