CAMPAIGN NOTES.

Why They Support It. After expressing in one of his North Island speeches good reasons for his opposition to the State Bank proposal, Mr Massey said: ''lt seems to uie that some people support a State Bank because they think that they might "bo able to use political influence to secure overdrafts at low rates of int-erest.'' A Soldier Candidate. "Where wore you in tho epidemic?" inquired a young male elector of Mr A. B. Sievwright on Tuesday night. ''Where was I in the epidemic?" replied Mr Sievwright.' "I was fighting in France for your safety." (Loud applause.) Labour's Thanks. Labour's gratitude to the soldiers for what they did in the war is apparently email, judging by hostile references mado by extreme Labour supporters at Mr ■Sievwright's meeting. Tho candidate spoke briefly, amidst interruptions, of the services of young New Zealand workers at tho front, when an interjector callously remarked: "Oh, you wero well paid for it." No Friends of Thrift. A question about thrift was asked of a Wellington candidate the other night. "Never once will you find the advocates of Revolutionary Socialism talking tlirift," he remarked. The "Loaves and Fishes" Days. A suggestion by Mr Macpherson, who is opposing the Hon. E. P. Lee, for Oamaru, that the Government had done nothing but legislate in the interests of its friends, comes rather oddly, says the "North Otago Times," from a candidate whose success in his campaign against Mr Herdman in that dim pa6t of which Mr Macpherson laves to dwell, was somewhere associated with that notorious policy of "loaves and fishes," instituted and used with such detrimental effect during the Seddon regime; a policy which, on the testimony or Opposition members themselves, had no Togue to-day. An Impossible Doctrine. A bit of ancient history was discussed at one of Mr R. A. Wright's meetings in Wellington Suburbs, when one of the audience interjected: "You were a Socialist yourself once." Mr Wright replied that some twenty-five years ago he joined an elementary Socialist class for the purpose of investigating the doctrines. After being a member of that class for about two years he discovered, as the result of Btudy, that it was absolutely impossible to carry out the ideas of Communist-Socialism as long as human nature remained as it was at present. Every effort that had been made to establish CommunistSocialist communities jn other countries had only confirmed his belief that in highly-civilised countries the doctrines were impossible of successful application.

Passing it On,

When asked how he would prevent "the big man" from passing on taxation, Mr A. W. Croskory, Labour candidate for Wellington Suburbs, ia reported to have replied: "By taxing income and land; ho will find it hard to pass those taxes on." Evidently, remarks the "Evening Post,'J Mr Croekery considered this a comp'ete answer to the question; but is it? Does Mr Ordskcry really believo that income-tax-ation, oimnot be passed 011? 16 so, ho hns great fnith, not to mention simplicity. The Taxation Commiltce which investigated this question with 'thoroughness ca-mo to a different conclusion. It found that in certain enterprises, such «is ft-eez'ing « f orks and gas manufacture, income-tax was of necessity passed on. Indeed it formed an item in the cost-sheet. In other enterprises —for example, in the companies formed to finance fanners —where the tax could not be paesed on owin? to competition with lenders paying lower taxation, the companies had no option but to leave that branch, of business. The farmers, who have felt and! are feeling the effect of tho withdrawn! of funds from this form of investment, will not thank Mr Croskory for his proposal.

No Other Leader Possible. On Saturday last Mr Massey addressed one of the largest meetings ever held in Hawera, and at the close of his speech the following resolution was carried on a show of hands, only two hands, as far as could be seen, being held up in opposition: — 'That this large and representative meeting of electors of Patea desire to convey to you the heartiest thanks and appreciation of the people of this electorate for the splendid services which you, as Prime Minister of the Dominion, hare given to the Empire during the very difficult years through which the nation has passed. Those services have not only brought great credit upon yourself" personally, but have also bsen very important to this young country. We are passing through economic difficulties, and the problems which, still have to be dealt with can only be solved by maintaining a strong and stable Government. We feel that there is no other leader in the country who has the capacity and ability to pull the Dominion through, and we desire to express to you, Mr Massey, our full confidence in you' and your Administration. We have nlso every confidence in the sitting member, Mr T>ixon, who has proved himself a, very hard worker and also attentive to all sections of ■ tho people, and we feel that, having every confidence in you and your sound judgment, it is the duty of all Reformers to do all in their power to secure the return of Mr Dixon, the candidate whom you have chosen. Wo thank yon for coming to the electorate, at no little inconvenience to yourself, to address the electors, and we trust that, as a result of the elections, you will be returned with a. strong majority over any possible combination of parties."

For the first time on record a pair of albatrosses built their nest this year on Taiaroa Heads (says the "Otago Daily Times"). The nest was near the signal station, and the signalman became much interested in the birds. Upwards of a dozes albatrosses at first visited tho place, and it seemed as though they were a pioneering committee selecting the site of a new settlement. The committee again visited the place several times after the nest was made andi one egg deposited in it. The nest was well up from the sea, and when a sheep would come near the albatross would jump off the nest, emit a hoarse cry, then snap its beak several times in quick succession. This snapping of the beak sounded like hand clapping, and it invariably served to send the sheep away from the nest. At length a more aggressive "sheep" came along in" the sharje of a man seeking curios. He unhesitatingly robbed tho nest and blew the egg. Nexb day the pair of albatrosses moped round, and later the "committee 1 ' visited the scene, but no further nesting has taken place. The robbing of the nest is regarded as a mean kind of thing to do, and it ta said that steps -will probably be taken to prohibit -unauthorised parsons from prowling round that locality, theobjeu of this being to protect the place for sea birds.
