Mr Biank (truant officer) reporter' navmg visited a number of schools, trom which the names of 167 ohildrei had been received. Prom this number I4d ordinary notices and seventeen of a fanal nature had been sent to parents: are cases had been taken into Court' and fines inflicted. Generally speaking u j attendances in the upper classes L- « " good, the infant classes beint chiefly responsible for absentees. Mr White (truant officer) reported having received thirty-three lists froir which thirty-eight ordinary notices and five final notices had been sent out; two oases had been taken into Court fines being Inflicted in each. The attendance had been fair, but colds and sore throats had been prevalent. The reports of both officers were adopted. Manual and Technical

The Manual and Technical Committee reoommonded Mr J. D. Brace as the Board's representative on the Board of Management of the Banks Peninsula Technical Association in place of Mr Dodds, resigned. The committee recommended that managers appointed for Ashburton, Greymouth, Fairlie, Pleasant Point, Temuka, Timaru, and Waimate be approved. A 'further recommendation from.the committee waf to the effect that the idea of holding a summer school at Greymouth as originally intended from December 12 to December 7\ should be abandoned, as the Department would not agree to meet the cost of carrying o n the sohool. The I three recommendations were approved. Buildings Committee.

The Buildings Osmmittee ' reported that a deputation from the New Brightlon Committee asked that something | Bhould be done as early as possible to meet the overcrowding of the school. It was resolved that .the architect draw up an application foi/a grant for the extension of one room in place of additions already applied for. Mr Jamieson' said that the New Bnghtop School waa very much overcrowded, and the extension was urgently needed.

The Education Department inquired whether the extra £6O required in connexion with the extension of the Cashmere School site could be found by the Board or the Committee. It was re•solved to ask the Department if a sulv sidy would bearailable on £3O promised by the committee, The Sumner Committee stated its willingness to remodel the ventilation ana hghting of the old portion of the school It was resolved to grant the necessary permission, subject to the architect's approval, and to congratulate the committee on its enterprise. Ohristclmrch East School The Appointments Committee report°d that it had received a letter from the School Committee expressing the hope that the Board would do its best to have tho Christchurch East School raised to tile status of a District High School. It was agreed to remind the Department that the Board had received n-j reply to its renewed application. i Correspondence. • Zealand Alliance wrote asking the Board to approve of the Alliance sending to head teachers a supply of schedules in connexion with •an essay competition on the subject of "Alcohol ind the Human Body and Mind." Permission was granted, subject to the ap» pjwal of the sohool committee in each Jase. . The Wellington secretary of the Young Helpers' League wrote asking for permission for Miss Ashford and Mrs Drury to visit the schools and speak of the worK of tho League. Permission was granted with the same vproviso as in the other case.

A letter was received from the Education iJepaxtmont notifying th© rosignation of Dr. Rowley, dental officer, and intimating that steps would be taken to fill the position as promptly as possible A letter <vm received from the Education Department expressing the opinion that education boards should not pay insurance companies large sums for the insurance of teachers and pupils. It was deuded to reply notifying the; Department that the Board would cancel its insurance policies provided the Department accepted liability for all accent* for which the Board might be held hnble.
