OBITUARY.

A Press Association telegram from Feilding states that Mr Henry Douglas Pike, aged 72, is dead. He was an excommercial traveller for many houses, and was weir known all over New Zealand. ' Mr Walter Smith, chief steward of tho Pclmerston North' Working Men's Club, died suddenly on Saturday morning. He had been in Palmerstoh North for ft considerable period, and was for about fifteen years chief steward of the club. Mr Smith" was a prominent Freemason. The death occurred on Monday, from pneumonia, following an attack of -malaria, of Mr Henry A. Smithson, M A. (Oson.), a member of the teaching staff of Wellinaton College. Deceased, whose placid demeanour made him a' great favourite with all with 'whom he came in contact, joined the staff of Wellington College in 19081 He was educated at Haileybury Public School, England, where he waß a prefect, and subsequently he graduated MA. at Lincoln College, Oxford. While at Oxford, the late Mr Smithson was stroke of the Lincoln College Eight and winner of the Lincoln College Mile, a rowinfe event. Previous to coming to New Zealand, he was for sorrifi time a tea-planter in Assam. At Wellington College he was for many vears in charge of Uie Natural Science Society and of the school museum, and also tooka keen interest in promoting the sport of rowing among the boys. Deceased leaves a widow and family of six young children. i Mr John McGregor, who died recently at Auckland at the age of 53, was one time a well-known Rugby footballer. About 30 years ago he was a representative player of high orderone of the famous "McGregor trio," ot which his brother "Dick" was perhaps ffhe best known. Mr McGregor formerly lived at Thames, where, besides bis football honours, he won laurels as a cricketer, representing the district on ' many occasions. In late years his pastime was bowling, as a member of the Grey Lynn Clnb. I
