After the men had been selected for work at the Chelsea sugar refining work 3 yesterday morning, those among them Who had" made contributions to thd Employees' -Provident Fund were handed back their contributions. A total of over £1000 was returned, in sums ranging from £10 up to £SO. In explaining the position this morning, the works manager said that the men had bad their money returned because thev left tJhc service. If they wero reinstated as members of tho fund, it would be bv grace of the trustees of the fund, "the workers themselves controlled the fund. Regardihg operations at the works, Mr Campbell said that they were in full swing, but that a normal output would not be attained for a week. The j iren only started to melt sugar at midnight last nigjht. They would be in J full swing in regard to the production ) of fine sugar within a week. There are about 1000 tons of raw j sugar at the works, and the Mokoia is ' due here from Fiji to-morrow with ISGO , tons, and the Rakanoa on Friday with. 2350 tons. A special meeting of the Union lias l.cen called for Sunday, at the Trades Hall, when several Labour M.P.'s will be present to elicit information regarding the alleged victimisation of 14 men, and other aspects pertaining to the I matter. i
