RED CROSS CARNIVAL AT WOOLSTON.

OPENED BY Mil A. E. G. RHODES

The carnival at Woolston organised on behalf of the funds of the Red Cross was opened yesterday by Mr A. J£. G. Rhodes, who was introduced to the large attendance bv the chairman (Mr J. Richardson) as a gentleman whose services on 1m? ha If of the Red Cross movement were well known and greatly appreciated. Air .Rhodes, who was received with applause, congratulated the district on the manner in which its people had risen to the call for funds for the Red Cross, oi' which his Excellency the Governor was president. Never were funds eo urgently needed as at the present time, and not only funds, but the work the ladies were doing. It had been reported—he might siato the ruinour was entirely unfounded—that there was no need for clothing, 'etc. He assured them that there was. In pyjamas alone they could not send too many. Tho «ew Zealanders themselves required at least 50C0 paii'6, and the work could be sent to every hospital- Mr Tripp, who had just returned, strongly urged the sending of pyjamas and clothes, and the urgent needs of the central organisation. He strongly commended the ladies of the Red Cross at "Woolston for their work and energy. Last year they had raised somewhere about £120 for the funds, and he hoped that this year they would exceed even that amount.

The chairman, Mr J. Richardson, and the president of the Red Cro® Branch, Mrs J. Thomson, were on the dais with Mr Rhodes. The hall was beautifully arranged. One side was taken up by the Methodist organisation, who controlled the variety stall, cake and home dainties stall; the ice-cream and fruit salad, flowers and bran tub. The St. John's branch of the Girls' Friendly Society took charge of the sweets stall and the junior branch of the G.F.S. had erected a Christmas tree. The Druids controlled the produce stall and soft drinks booth, while the Rechabites were in charge of the competitions. Mr McGregor Wright managed a spodal game, "Save the King," in which handsome prizes were presented ior the winners. ' <• The carnival will be continued till tomorrow night.
