FIRES.

TIMBER YARD DESTROYED. VERY HEAVY DAMAGE DONE. (press association tkt.koramA NAPIER. .January 20. Fire to-night destroyed tho coal and timber yard and factory of Messrs Bull Bros., contractors, Port Aliuriri. A fairly stiff north-easterly wind was blowing, and the timber, of which thcro was a very largo stock on hand, burned with startling rapidity. Tho lire started in tho boiler-room of tho factory, and was first noticed by several tram passengers. Tho timber yard and factory and a house adjoining were completely destroyed, and two valuable horses, owned by the firm, were burned to death. Other houses adjoining tho yard , are in grave, danger, and willing workers are engaged in salving the furniture, as the firo is stil] blazing fiercely. Strenuous efforts aro being made to save the adjoining premises. The damage so far is estimated at £2-5,000. At about 10 o'clock last night the Fire Brigado were callcd to Messrs Maddren Bros.' rope and twine works in Madras street, a firo having been discovered therein. About 5 cwt of cloth cuttings wcro destroyed. The buildings and contents arc insured under a schedule policy in various offices. Earlier in tho evening a false alarm, was sent in from the box at the corner of Dean and Madras streets St. Albans.
