EDUCATIONAL PRIVILEGES. SCHEME ADOPTED BY CANTERBURY COLLEGE. At yesterday's meeting of tho Board of Governors of Cantqrbsry College the following provisions for free tuition and help to tho children whoso fathers or brothers have been killed or totally disabled in the war were agreed to: — 1. That in the Girls' High School, children whoso fathers have been killed or totally disabled in the present war who avail themselves of tho usual Sixth Standard proficiency certificate for n junior free pfece, or have passed such examination ok is provided for in Regulations for Free Places in Secondary Schodls, issued August 26th, 1915, bo granted five pounds (£5) per annum towards cost of books, etc., during tho tenure of such froo place.

High School, children whoso fathers havo been killed or totally disabled in tho present war must hare first obtainod a Sixth Standard proficiency certificate, or havo pnssed such examination as is provided for in Regulations for Freo Places in Secondary Schools, issued August 2<jth, 1915, but shall not bo r»»onir*)d to submit to the further test that at present is required from those seeking admission to the school, and shall bo granted a junior free placo, and live pounds per annum towards cost of books, etc., during tho tenure of such free place. d. That where ft Brother has been killed or totally disabled, similar concessions may be granted to the brothers and sisters of such brother, provided that tho parent bo a widow, and to a largo e»tent dependent on tho son who has been killed -or totally disabled. Each such cuso.shall bo decided by the Board, after full and careful consideration of the circumstances.

4. That.in all casos the holder of a junior free placo must at tho proper time qualify for a senior free placo. according to the Edifcation Department's regulations, jis set out in clauses 7 (b) and (e) of Regulations for Free Places for Secondary .Schools, issued in April and May, 15}08. If a pupil bo thus qualified, the grant of £5 per annum to bo continued during tlftr tenure ol" the senior free place. 5. In tho event of the holder, ol' such junior free place being unable to qualify at tho eud of the «econd year for a senior free placo, ho or sho may, jon tho recommendation, of tho principal, bo allowed to hold a junior freo plaoc for tho third year (with the grant of £o), for .the purpose of, qualifying for a senior freo placo. Such recommendations must be made by tho principal, in accordance with tho provisions in tho Education Act (see Clause 5. section I of Regulations, issued April and May, 190S).

G. That, such children as aforesaid, who arc not technically qualified for a free place, but who are proved by an entrance examination to bo capable of doing work equal to thart of the Sixth Standard proficiency certificate, at leasts bo granted free tuition, without a money grant, to enable them to qualify for a junior or senior free place, when concessions similar to those enumerated in paragraphs 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 may bo granted.

7. That, in tho ease of a country child, who may havo to board in town, an additional sum of ten pounds per u nn.itni be granted as part of boarding fees, provided that the pupil resides at tbe (Jills' or lloys' Hostel. That th» grant to necessitous students (Canterbury College Regulations XV.) bo mcrcnscu to .£4O in tho case of all persons in the position here contemplated who may come into residence at Canterbury College, if they should be* capable and desirous of proceeding to a university careor. 9. Such grants shall not be payable to holders of scholarships, exhibitions, or school bursaries, and shall be paid only so long as funds are available for thcT purpose. »
