PARLIAMENT AND THE WAR.
TO THE KDITOR O* "Till PBBSS.'' Sir, —Seeing the heavy debt that is piling up against New Zealand, a national debt which is greater by £50,000,000 than the national debt of Germany twenty years ago, it is about time dur Parliament gave a iead in economy. Having now a National Cabinet without opposition, wo ought to bo able to do without all members of Parliament outside the Cabinet, whilst the war lasts, thereby saving the country many thousands of pounds. Some of these members are politically dishonest. One is reported to have said that the land pays only £700,000 a year in taxes, whereas tobacco smokers pay £600,000. Does this member deserve the pay of the country by making such false statements? The Prime Minister has been offered the services of members of Parliament to help recruiting, by speaking at different centres. The best way they can help recruiting is by making a sacrifice, and withdrawing from Parliament, and thereby save tie country many thousands of pounds. Then tho young men of New Zealand, seeing such an example, will bo willing to make the greater sacrifice.—Yours, etc., AJAX.
