TURNING ON ELECTRICITY FOR BROMLEY.

PROPOSALS OUTLINED

A meeting of residents of t_9 Bromley district was held in the Bromley School on Friday evening, to consider proposals fo/ electric lighting in Bromley. Mr H. J. Huggins presided.

Tho Heathcoto County Council's proposed scheme was explained by Mr G. K. Burton, member of: tho Heathcoto County Council for tho Bromley Riding, who stated that the ratepayers- of. tho Tiding would bo asked to authorise tbo Council to obtain a loan of £4500, to inaugurate the? scheme,'aud the district would bo rated to tho extent of _d in the £ on tho capital value to pay for the loan. They had.offers for the supply of current from tho Public Works Department and from tho Tramway Board. Tho Tramway Board's offer was lid per unit. If the current was taken from the Tramway Board they would bo allowed to uso the Board's poles free of charge. Every. portion of the district would be served, and almost every house could obtain current. The cost of installing electricity in a fourroomed house would be about £7. Ho had reason to believe that they would be able to get legislation to enable them !to assist householders to put in electricity. If not, arrangements could bo made with, city electrical firms te havo the cost paid off by tho time payment system. It wa6 proposed to charge 4d per unit for household lighting. Probably there would be a minimum chargo of 2s a month. He had reason to believe that a reduction would be mad© for power for dairying machinery and farming purposes. Mr E. Barnes (engineer to tho Heathcote County Council) explained the proposal in technical details. After discussing the matter for some time tho meeting decided to approve the scheme, and expressed its confidence in the members of tho Council to carry it out. An amendment was proposed to tho effect that the time was not opportune for such a scheme, and was lost by 21 votes to 11.
