BERLIN, April 30. -A i : ;;.;! unique states that German artillery bombarded the fortress of Dunkirk. ........ . " LONDON, April 30. r The French Embassy states'that 19 shells have fallen in Dunkirk. Twenty people were killed and 45 wounded. PARIS, May 1. A shell fell into Dunkirk at three in the afternoon. It came ac a bolt from the blue. The first effect was one of amazement. Presently "three German aeroplanes appeared, and reconnoitred thp townj and shells with a diameter of 380 millimetres .began to fall in quick succession, airmen apparently directing the fire. * The shells were scattered about the town, and did great damage. Anti-air-craft guns drove off the airmen and the bombardment ceased. The poplation showed no panic, though a few thousand quitted the town, mostly towards Calais. " Critics opine that the Germans brought up guns of large calibre, which were intended to assist in the recent effort to reach Calais. LONDON, May 1. Newspapers suggest that the Germans -have established monster guns near Nieuport. fNieuport is eighteen miles from Dunkirk, and the Geraian lines are north of Nieuport."] The High Commissioner reports:— LONDON. May Ist (5.20 p.m.). Ten more shells were dropped in Dunkirk last evening. There were no victims. •
