TWO DEATHS

SERGEANT E. R,. GUTHRIE

News-was received by his relatives in Christchurch last night of the death from wounds—presumably received in tho fighting at tho Dardanelles—of Sergeant Edmund Robert Guthrie, of tho Ist Australian infantry Brigade. Sergeant Guthrie, who was 33 year e of ags, was tho eldest son of tho late Mr J. S. Guthrie, at ono time editor of "The Press." Sergeant Guthrio was well-known in many circles in Christchurch. Ho was a prominent senior footballer, being a member and one of the founders of tho High School Old Boys' Football Club, and was for some time a member of the executive ot the Canterbury Rugby Union. Ho was also for several years a leading member of th G Canterbury Rowing Club, representing tho club at many regattas. Before ho left Christchurcb he was a lieutenant in the old Highland Rifles, of which Lieut.-Col. l>. Macbean Stewart, now in charge of tho Ist (Canterbury) Infantry Regiment, was in command. About eighteen months ago Sergeant Guthrie went to Australia. When the war broke out he joined tho Ist Australian Infantry Brigade «« a private, but was very quickly promoted to the rank of eergeant. A brother of Sergt. Guthrie's. Georce Guthrie, is at the front with tho New Zealand Howitzer Battery, and another brother. Nigel, is an engineer on board one of tho vessels engaged at tho Dardanelles. Tin; oablo message received was from Alexandria, and it is presumed that it came from tb* latter brother.
