INTERIM BRITISH REPLY

An interim reply has been sent to tho Washington note in rcferenco to American cargoes. It is understood that in general character it is couched in frank and friendly terms.
WASHINGTON. January 9
The -State Department regards the British reply on the contraband question as inconclusive. Mr Bryan and Mr Wilson are discussing the reply with tho object of making further representations lo Britain on .**cveral unsettled points, notably, tho shortening of the timo of detention of ships.
