We aro now able to announce the result of the competition we inaugurated in order to obtain through such of our readers as aro interested in apple-culture on a small <-.calo tho general opinion as to the six best apples fof cultivation in moderate-sized gardens for home uso. The competition av&s very popular, moro than 600 lists being received in tho six days during which wo kept tho competition open. Apple-growers, we should say, will bo surprised at the very largo number of varieties irhich our readers admiro to tho point or* placing them amongst "tho six best." Wo offered two prizes—ono to go to tho contributor whoso list most nearly agreed with the list determined by the plebiscite, and tho other to the sender of tho list which an expert -elected by the Editor might adjudge the best. Wo submitted tho choice of the ideal list to Mr T. W. Kirk, Director of Orchards in tho Department of Agriculture.
