Mr F. D. Yonge.'of Auckland, arrived in Christchurch yesterday.
At tho public meeting of welcome to tho Rev. J. Paterson on Thursday, Mr D. C. Burns, session clerk of St. Paul's Church, thanked tie Rev. Dr. Erwin, who had been Moderator for the church during tho vacancy, and on behalf of tho congregation presented him with a cheque in recognition of his kindly services during the period.
At the close of the induction servico in St. Paul's Church on Thursday, Mr E. Macrae moved: "That the congregation present accords to our late minister, Rev. T. Tait, now of Adelaide, our deepest sympathy in his at the death of his father, Mr John Tait, who Avas an elder of St. Paul's Church." Tho motion was carried in silence.
[ As there was some doubt as to whether Mr H. F. Toogood would after all be a candidate for tlie Christchurch North seat on account, of hi§ having been offered the position of engineer to the Patea Harbour, Board, Mr D. Jones states that he has received information from Mr Toogood that he will adhere to his decision to stand for the seat, and will decline the appointment that has been.offered him at'Patea. -
The Rev. Father T. J. O'Donnell, a secular priest, located at, Stanley. (Tasmania), arrived at Wellington from Sydney by the Ulimaroa on Wednesday. -He intends visiting Timaru and Auckland pnor to returnirig to Tasmania. .Another member of the Roman Catholic clergy to arrive by the same steamer was the Rev. Father Mulcahy, of Mackay, Queensland, who eame> to Wellington to see Ins brother, a priest of the Redcmptorist Order, who is jrather seriously ill.
The following appointments and promotions in the Post and Telegraph partment are announced:—Mr G. F. B. Smallbone,' postmaster' Waihi, appointed postmaster, Dannevirke, in place" of, Mr R. C. Black, who is retiring op.superannuation after over 42 years' service: Mr M. B. Ford, senior mail cleric,; Timaru, .promoted to a similar position at Invercargill; Mr R. Anderson, senior mail clerk, Napier.. is to retain the position there, which has been raised in grade; Mr W. R. H. Erpe, telegraphist, appointpostmaster at Matamata.
