VESSEL MAKES'RECORD TRIP. The Union Company's geared ' turbine' I at-amer • Maheno arrived along-ido the Queen's wharf, Wellington, at 3.15 on Thursday afternoon, having accomplished a rooord trip of a little over twenty hours from' Port Chalmers. She cleared, Otago Heads at, 5.85 p.m. on Wednesday, sad encountered strong head winds and eea from "Akaroa Point to Wellington Heads. In spite of this the. vessel oovered the - journey, of 320 miles •at an svexage speed of-16'knots'at a reduced pressure of 1201b on the new tarbines. which worked smoothly .«_ the.way. - When the pressure is increased to tbo top limit of 1351b a speed of 17_' knots at eea.should bo easily attained. ' . *

The-ves-el-left Wellington yesterilay-for Sydney, whence- sho will sail 'on the' 22nd inst,-for Auckland, in placo of.;tho Manuka, which -will transfer -to .the Sydney-Welling-tori-Lyttelton-Melbourne-, trade. - The Maheno will remain in ' tho Sydney-Auckland-, service. The Maitai. has been withdrawn from tho intercolonial service, and will run-in the East Coast trade in place of the Monowai, which is- undergoing overhaul at Port Chalme-n*.
