DARFIELD.

The weather for a week past has been dry and warm, with nor'-westers prevailing. On Wednesday night there was a light fall of rain, followed by a thick fog. on Thursday morning, which, did not clear away till nearly midday. Every advantage is being taken of the improved conditions, and the long-delayed farm work is being pushed on vigorously. Large consignments of fruit and shelter trees are arriving in the district, and* apple trees, in particular, are being planted in great numbers. The mild weather has caused some kinds of trees to commence budding, and it is to be

hoped that the development will not Ih> too rapid, in viow of the severe frosts likely to be experienced yet.

A hockey match was played hero between the girls of the Glentunnel school and the Darfield High School on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in a win for the homo team by 3 goals to nil. Mr A. H. Donne controlled the game.

An elderly man was convicted and discharged on a charge of drunkenness at Charing Cross, and fined 10s on a charge of using insulting language. Mes>srs H. A. Knight and D. Gillanders, J.P/s, were on tho Bench.

The Methodist Church held a very successful tea and concert in the Do-r----field school on Monday. The tea was well patronised by friends from various parts of the district. The concert following was also a- great success. The Rev. J. Harris presided. All the items were, thoroughly appreciated by the audience. The following contributed : — Pianoforte solos, Misses Willsteed and Abralrams; violin and cornet duet, Mrs W. MoClelland and Mr M. Johnson; recitations, Mrs P. Watson, Miss E. Hawke, and Master Cecil Ashwell: songs, Misses M. Rudd (2), N. Johnson, Tj. Abrahams, Mrs J. Calder, and Mr Langley, violin solo, Mrs W. McClelland. Miss Johnson played the accompaniments. Addresses'were given hy tbe Rev. J. Pringle, Messrs Jebson. and Macfarlane. ' Votes of thanks were pass-, ed to the performers and those who provided the refreshments for the tea.
