SEPTIC TANKS AT CASHMERE.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PBESS." j Sir,—So-called experts in septic j tanks are in the habit of telling us how free they are from smell and that the outflow is pure enough to drink. But after three years of passing daily the septic tank at the corner of Port Hills and Quarry road. I am satisfied* that "Fisherton's" opinion in Tuesday's "Press" is much mora correct than the opinion of experts. The tank is not only a vile nuisance to the many who walk and drive along Roffmoro and Port Hills road, but is also an eyesore. It has been stated that the authorities are within their rights in erecting septic tanks. Quite so; that has never been denied, but they need not be thrust on the public gaze and nose. As to rights those who havo property in the vicinity have also somo right to protest against anything that is offensive or likely to lower the price of their sections. It would not be so bad if the sufferers wero tho cause of the nuisance, but that the people on the flat and on the banks of the river should suffer and ; the cause of the offenco go free is a matter that the Courts will test if the authorities fail to show more wisdom. Tho paths round the river and the Hills have become popular drives and walks, but if the river is goiug to be made a. 6tinkinf drain, the roads dotted over with unsightly buildings and heaps of rubbish and the air laden with the smell of dirty drains, septic tanks, then, I am afraid, not only the district but tho reputation of our city will suffer. — Yours, etc., „„., ~,-Tvr*.
