The weather was perfect for tho function, and the lawns and garden looked beautl- ; ful. Their Excellencies, with Captam Eastwood, aide-de-camp, in attendance, received the guests on tho lawn - . - ' Soon after four o'clocE the guest* \ began to arrive, the large proportion' in motor-cars. Very complete *rr«»&- . ments were made for dealing with Hie traffic. Cars arriving entered by the _ main entranco from Papanui road and left by tho new road leading on to Papanui road: Under these conditions thpre was no confusion.
Very soon the lawns presented *n '■ animated and picturesque appearance, the fashionable costumes of the l*rj!O number of ladies present adding greatly ~ to the brilliancy of the wcme. Splec- < tions were played durin? the afternoon by the Burnham Band and bagpipe music was also given. . ~ Afternoon tea was provided in. £ - large marquee, the tables m ™"W ' • •were very artistically decorated wwj _ flowers and ferns.
