FIRES.
LITTLE RAKAIA OUTBREAK
On Thursday morning, at about 10 o'clocl*. a five-stalled stable, cowshed, and piggery, and other outbuildings on tho farm of Mr J. Gorman, of Little Rakaia, near Southbridgc, was complotcly destroyed by lire, tho origin of which is a complete mystery. Thoro .was no ono near at tho tinio the fire broke out, and before it was discovered tho flames had a. good hold. The contents of tho stabio, including a quantity of harness and machinery, were destroyed. Thero were no horses in tho building at tho The property was insured in tho New Zealand office for £200.
Tho Fire Brigade received a call at 3.20 o'clock on Saturday afternoon from Sydenham, where a fire had broken out in a cup; board in a three-roomed house, 47 Coleridge street. The fire, which was attributed to a defective chimney, was promptly extinguished before much damage was done. The contents were not insured, and the insurances on tho building, owned by Mr Purdie, No. 6 St. Asaph street, were not ascertainaile.
There- was a call from Stewart street (near St. Asaph street) for tbe Brigade at 2 p.m. on Saturday. It proved to be a grass fire, and was promptly put out by tho motor chemical engine. The City Firo Brigade received a call last night to Dr. Brown's residence at the corner of Colombo and Devon streets, Sydenham. The outbreak occurrwl in a heap of garden rubbsih alongside an outhouse and before the Brigade could arrive it had been subdued.
