A twenty-milo road race promoted by the Kaiap'oi Cycling Club for Saturday afternoon last was not held. Owing to limited entries owing to harvest «ad counter attractions, the race was postponed. Yesterday, at the morning service at the Kaiapoi Methodist Church, the o»-
portunity bnd served to invito the chairman and members of local gorerniii"- bodies to a citizens' Sunday service. Included in the congregation were the Mayor and Councillors, members of the Harbour Board and School Committee, members of the Eyre County Council, and other representatives, past and present, of local boards. The singing of the National Anthem opened the service which was conducted by the Rev. A. Mitchell. Mr H. Holland, Mayor or Christchurch, gave an address from tne pnlpit, talcing as a text Hebrews, chap, si., verso 10: "For he looked for a city which hath foundations whose builder and maker is Gad." He referred to the planning of these local governments with a view to increase not only the comforts of the people, but with the object of raising social conditions to a higher plane. It was said that Jesus Christ, overlooking the beautiful and the magnificent City of Jerusalem, wept over it. He was acquainted with its sins and its sorrows, and no doubt it mi;:ht be, with the same feelings the cities of the Dominion of the present iinio could be viewed. He was convinced that those who took part in municipal life vrerc free from "graft." and were actuated by a desire to do their best in their respective positions, and that eve r y attention should bo piven to the uplifting of thp morals of the peonle as well as a care for their health and personal comforts. It was necessary to lay foundations such as would assure good regulation, and the men who were representatives of the people, he contended, had responsibilities which could not he treated lichtly. He concluded by honing that annual addre"?.«p« would be given in the churches lost thry should forget what a duty they owed to the State.
